Exterior Overview
The J95 Land Cruiser is a sneaky good sports utility vehicle. A precursor to the Lexus GX, this body-on-frame 4×4 boasts an upmarket feel, premium materials, and loads of space. This example boasts only 84k verified and documented miles and is powered by the same reliable and easy-to-service 2.7L engine we enjoyed in Stateside Tacomas and 4Runners. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scratches, the Millennium Silver (1C0) over Black two-tone paint is in good shape. Set off by OEM rainguards, a hard shell spare tire cover, refinished 16″ OEM alloys, privacy tint, and chrome mirror caps, this classically styled truck is easy on the eyes as well. With room for eight, this safe and spacious Toyota would make for a killer daily driver, a unique family hauler, and a cool campsite companion. A rig that does everything well like this Prado should be appreciated, and that’s why it’s a certified Japanese Classic.
Interior Overview
The cabin is in good nick and comes with an impressive amount of options, space, and safety features. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS front airbags are standard equipment. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column, and everyone on board can enjoy abundant shoulder, head, and legroom. The center stack includes controls for the automatic climate control system and audio. The former blasts cold A/C and piping hot heat depending on your preference, and the latter fills the cabin with tunes to supplement your motoring experience. Rear occupants have their own heating controls, which is an upgrade on this model. The seats are trimmed in a textured gray cloth. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears and were clearly cared for by the Japanese owner. The middle row can slide forward, and the rear row tucks up into the D Pillar to maximize cargo volume. Power folding mirrors, power locks, and power windows all work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. The headliner, door cards, and carpets have escaped the past 25 years without sustaining major abuse. Even the owner’s manuals are included with the purchase of this wonderful truck!
Mechanical Overview
Under the skin, this is essentially a 4Runner. That makes parts sourcing a snap and modification cost next to nothing. The 3RZ-FE under the bonnet is fresh off a recent oil and filter service. It kicks to life care of a new 12V battery and we chucked in a new fuel filter and engine air filter for good measure. To keep the oil level full, one of our trained techs installed a new front main seal, distributor o-ring, and resealed the oil pump cover. Refreshed and ready to go, the 2.7L feels hearty and is mated to a stout automatic gearbox. The surefooted Full-Time 4WD puts all the power to the pavement, and for off-road excursions, a center locker and low range can be engaged. It can cruise comfortably at US interstate speeds, and the long wheelbase distributes road imperfections nicely. New rear shocks have improved the ride quality, and we also replaced the front sway bar links for state inspection. The power steering system was overhauled, too, which is a pesky job. The rack was rebuilt, and we added new inner and outer tie rods to dial in the proper alignment. The ABS brakes feel confident and the 16″ alloys are wrapped in new 31″ Falken all-terrain rubber. The new tires look killer, reduce road noise, and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
