Exterior Overview
The new millennium brought forth many new changes to Toyota, and attacking the Germans was clearly in the forefront of their thinking. Taking aim at the 3 Series, the brand felt that it could build a world-class sports sedan that could compete with the best! This 2000 Altezza features knife-edge handling, room for the family, and a rev-happy powerplant mated to a six-speed manual transmission. This rear-drive sedan is finished in a lovely Super White (040), and is set off by an OEM front lip and OEM optional grille, and 16″ aftermarket alloys. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs, the paint is in fine shape and this RS200 is fresh off a comprehensive service that included a timing belt and water pump job! Best of all, this sports saloon is offered with 108k verified and documented miles on the clock. Perfect as a fun year-round daily driver, this sled would also make for a confident canyon carver or autocrossing all-star. A Japanese Classic to the core, this affordable, reliable, and practical ride does just about everything well and is a blast to motor!
Interior Overview
The cabin looks decidedly more modern than most of our imports. The design team at Toyota made some really nice choices, and the ergonomics are top-notch, too. Access inside is made easier thanks to functional keyless entry. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS airbags are standard. The pilot can find the ideal seating position thanks to a tilt-adjustable steering column. The seats are supportive and trimmed in a black sport cloth. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears, and the same material is mirrored in the door cards. The rear seats include a pass-through for some skis, and the headliner and carpets are in good shape. For those who plan to drive daily, the power folding mirrors, electric locks, and power windows all work in typical Toyota fashion. The OEM audio pipes tunes through the cabin, and the automatic climate control blasts heat and cold A/C. Aside from a non-functional pop-up Japanese navigation unit, its hard to complain about the cabin, and it was clearly cared for in a prior life overseas.
Mechanical Overview
Featuring 50/50 weight distribution and a rear drive layout, this reflexive sedan is a hoot to corner. It is also fun to wind out, with its Yamaha-engineered 3S-GE engine. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 2.0L springs to life courtesy of a new 12V battery. A new engine air filter allows the BEAMS powerplant to breathe freely, all the way up to its 7,800 RPM redline. As noted before, we took care of the most expensive preventive maintenance service there is. A new timing belt, water pump, and thermostat were replaced, which should keep you covered for the next ten years or 100,000 km. A fresh bath of coolant keeps things running at the right operating temps, and the four-banger feels healthy as a horse. It’s mated to a close-ratio six speed gearbox. The manual lacks any grinds or hitches, and the extra cog is ideal for freeway cruising. The suspension is predictable and can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse. The power steering is direct and on point, and we have flushed the system out and replaced the old fluid with new stuff. The ABS brakes do a wonderful job of slowing this Toyota down, and new front calipers, pads, and rotors keep stopping distances as short as possible. The Euro-S alloys are wrapped in good Bridgestone rubber. Knee-deep in tread, they’ll keep you glued straight to the pavement. Turn key and ready to roll, this superior sports saloon only needs a new American owner.
