Exterior Overview
Subaru’s second-generation Impreza was a remarkable redesign when it debuted in 2000. While the updated “bugeye” styling was polarizing, models like this Version 7 WRX STi proved to be leaps and bounds better than the GC8’s preceding them. The V7 also introduced one of the brand’s best engine designs, the high-revving semi-forged EJ207, and was the first model to boast a six-speed STi gearbox. With only 78k verified and documnted miles on the clock, Japanese-market WRX’s offer a unique proposition in the US market, where many of our domestic models have been driven hard and put away wet. The cosmetics on this Midnight Black Pearl GD tell a different story, as only a few paint chips and dings are present from day to day use. Set off by a factory rear spoiler, Xenon headlamps, OEM fog light covers, and LM Sport wheels, this beautiful bugeye looks the part, and has an OEM plus appearance. Collectable, stylish, and fun to beat around on or off pavement, this is a road going rally car, and a true Japanese Classic!
Interior Overview
Completely restyled from the first generation models, this GDB’s interior feels decidedly modern, and was designed with performance in mind. Blue Alcantara sport seats are thickly bolstered, and the same blue color-keyed upholstery extends throughout the rear seats and door cards. For being 25 years young, the fabric is in good shape overall, with no discernible rips, stains, or tears. Dual SRS airbags were made standard, and the sculpted dash allows you to obtain a clear view of the pavement ahead. The center stack features tried and true automatic climate control, and upgraded BOSS audio headuit with integrated Bluetooth. Ideal as a seasonal sports car, cold A/C and hot heat are fully functional. To the right of the steering wheel, controls for headlight height adjustment and a trick factory intercooler sprayer are on hand. The driver gains access to a factory MOMO steering wheel, as well as independent height adjustment for the steering column and seat base. The rear bench is spacious enough to squeeze in a couple of additional passengers, and the remaining materials are in good shape, from the headliner to the carpets, which are protected by plush OEM mats. Power windows, locks, and power folding mirrors all work like a charm, and we even retained the original owner’s manual, maintenance booklet, and a factory optional Defi boost gauge, to help the next pilot keep an eye on their PSI’s!
Mechanical Overview
After undergoing a full redesign, the Impreza was ready for the new millennium. The chassis was more rigid, and a host of driveline upgrades were performed. The EJ207 engine is now equipped with variable valve timing and is fresh off an oil and filter service. A new 12v battery was installed to aid ignition, and new spark plugs, engine air filter, and a new fuel so that it runs right as rain. It sounds killer thanks to a titanium Fujitsubo exhaust that frees up a couple of ponies. We also refreshed the four-banger with a set of new valve cover gaskets so that the oil level stays full. The 2.0L pulls hard to redline and feeds power through a strong six-speed manual gearbox. Subaru’s symmetrical AWD puts power to the ground and delivers loads of all-weather grip. It gets up to freeway merging speeds lickedy split, quick and slows down just as fast, thanks to new front and rear brake pads and rotors. The Brembo brakes are massive, and ABS is on hand should you plan to ply in the snow. The power steering is light and easy to articulate, and the suspension is predictable and can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse. The LM sport wheels are wrapped in brand-new rubber and this tun key canyon carver is retail-ready to go.
