Exterior Overview
The 90 series Prado is a true do it all SUV. It’s poised on tarmac, but really shows its off-road pedigree over loose surfaces. It’s also built on a 4Runner frame, but has loads more interior space and equipment, which allows it to fit right in next to big, brooding, modern SUVs. Our 2000 Prado TX is a handsome unit, finished in Natural White (056) and set off by 16″ aftermarket wheels, beefy Falken all-terrains, and OEM rainguards. It’s also logged a mere 94k verified and documented miles, which is scant compared to most old-school Toyotas here in the States. Powered by a determined turbodiesel engine, full-time 4WD, and a rugged body-on-frame construction, this Japanese Classic has enough space for the family and is one of the most capable sports utilities we sell!
Interior Overview
The interior is spacious, capable, and most importantly, it can comfortably seat five. The seats are trimmed in patterned tan cloth and have resisted any major defects, including rips, stains, or tears. The dash is in good shape, as well, and an optional factory field monitor is plopped atop the center stack. Displaying environmental conditions, direction of travel, and a built-in trip computer, it can assist if your phone dies on the trails. Dual SRS airbags are on hand to assist those in need, and the driver can tilt the steering column at will to gain additional comfort behind the wheel. The center stack features an easy to use automatic climate control unit, complete with cold A/C and piping hot heat. Adjacent to the HVAC, we upgraded the factory audio system with a BOSS head unit with Bluetooth functionality. Complete with US FM and Bluetooth capability. To funnel natural airflow throughout the cabin, power windows can unfurl rapidly, alongside a power moonroof. Power locks work like a charm, as do the mirrors, which fold in and out electronically. For being almost three decades old, it’s hard to scrutinize the interior. The headliner is clean, and is held tight and taut against the roof skin. Save for some peeling door card fabric, and an inoperable factory keyless remote and antenna, this classic cockpit should keep most everyone satisfied!
Mechanical Overview
Easy to drive and maintain like a 4Runner, this Prado offers way more capability with increased ground clearance and a full time 4WD drivetrain. It’s exceptionally durable, and we can say the same for the 2.7l 3RZ-FE under the hood, as well. Shared with our US market, we’ve given this four-banger a once-over for the road ahead. It’s fresh off an oil and filter service, and we installed a new engine air filter for basic maintenance. It gets up to highway speeds with haste, and a smooth shifting automatic handles power delivery. A selective transfer case allows for shifting between high and low ranges when needed, and a center locking differential can be deployed if you get stuck. We refreshed the suspension heavily. New rear shocks were installed to soften up the ride, and we installed new front lower control arms and lower ball joints to help this Prado ace state inspection. A new front axle seal was also pressed in to keep all gear oil internal. New rear upper and lower control arms tighten up handling, and we freshly aligned this rig to factory specs. The power steering is easy to maneuver, and the brakes clamp down hard thanks to new pads and rotors up front. Four new Falken tires were mounted up here at the shop. The new all-terrains suit this truck’s aesthetic nicely, and should last for tens of thousands of miles to come!
