Our heavy use and Toyota's dogged determination is exactly why models like this 2000 SSR-V are so special
Exterior Overview
The 3rd-generation Hilux Surf is an enduring model. Just look at our comparable 4Runners in the US, which have mostly crested above the 250-300,000 mile mark. Our heavy use and Toyota’s dogged determination is exactly why models like this 2000 SSR-V are so special, as this SUV boasts just 108k verified and documented miles. It’s also equipped with the same 2.7l drivetrain we received here in the states, and center-locked 4WD. Finished in Natural White, the cosmetics are in above-average shape and feature some upgrades we never received here in the US, like an optional swing-out tire carrier. A factory rear spoiler, OEM rainguards, an aluminum rear bumper protector, and 16″ Mickey Thompson-style alloys round off the aesthetic, and the cosmetics are in fine shape overall save for some minor spots of touch up, and a few dings. This Surf is special, and sure to hold its value. If you take care of it, this Japanese Classic should treat you well for a lifetime!
Interior Overview
The cabin is in well above average shape. It’s intuitively designed, ergonomic, and surprisingly mimics the fit and finish of our American cockpits. It also features a few upgrades For starters, a modern Pioneer headunit pipes in the tunes and even includes Bluetooth integration so you can keep your eyes on the road ahead. Toyota placed added emphasis on safety for the N185 chassis, and made dual SRS airbags and ABS standard equipment. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading and is in good overall shape, despite a slight peel at the base of the windshield. The driver benefits from a tilt adjustable steering column to find the ideal seating position on a longer road trip. Power windows, mirrors, electric rear glass, and power locks all work in typical Toyota fashion making daily use more enjoyable. The automatic climate system is simple to operate, and cold A/C and piping hot heat are on hand for those living in seasonal climates. The gray cloth upholstery has survived the past 25 years without sustaining major damage. This can be attributed to a set of black leather seat covers, which provide a stylish contrast against the grey carpets and headliner. The headliner is in good shape, as are the carpets. Leagues better than our 25 year old domestic trucks, this Surf really impresses.
Mechanical Overview
The convenient part of owning this Surf is that stateside 4Runners came with the same drivetrain. Powered by the 3RZ-FE four-cylinder this N185 starts right up, and is fresh off an oil and filter service. The 2.7 liter purrs like a kitten thanks to a new set of spark plugs, and idles smoothly. To ensure this Surf utilizes all its available oil, a new valve cover gasket was installed, along with new half moon seals. Mated to a slick-shifting automatic gearbox, the Hilux manages to accelerate adequately, and sustained highway use is comfortable and stress-free. When subpar weather arrives, 4WD is easy to engage, and for really sticky situations, an optional center locker and low gearing can be deployed. The suspension benefits from new front lower control arms and ball joints, and new swaybar links up front. The power steering feels light and predictable, and the ABS brakes have tons of life left. To make the most of the new Falken all-terrain tires we installed, a fresh alignment was performed here at the shop. The frame condition is above average on this Surf, and to the discerning enthusiast, it’s hard to say no to this example!
