With room for eight, this full-time 4x4 rig is ideal as a daily driver, kid hauler, or unique overlander.

Exterior Overview

Smooth, capable, and easy to service, the 90 Series Prado is a seriously good JDM SUV. The same bulletproof 3.4L V6 as our domestic 4Runners powers this 1999, and this rig is fresh off a recent service in our shop. Turn key and ready to rock, this TX is offered with a mere 79k verified and documented miles on the ticker. With room for eight, this full-time 4×4 rig is ideal as a daily driver, kid hauler, or unique overlander. Set off by facelift bodywork, refinished OEM alloys, a TRD exhaust, OEM rainguards, and a sleek factory bash bar, this Dark Blue Mica over Gray (KC8) Landy is quite the looker aside from a few minor scuffs, dings, and chips associated with normal use. As an all-around decent performer, this affordable Japanese Classic is rugged, reliable, and in wonderful shape!

Interior Overview

The cabin is spacious and well-equipped. It is wider, taller, and longer than its 4Runner cousin and the materials are way more up-market. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column to find the ideal driving position. Power mirrors and power locks work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. The dashboard houses dual SRS airbags as standard equipment, and lacks any cracking or fading. Mounted centrally, an updated, functional OEM field monitor displays information about the direction of travel, pitch and roll, and exterior temperature to those within the cabin. Directly below is a simple-to-use digital automatic climate control system that feeds cold A/C and piping hot heat through the cabin on request. If you prefer more natural ventilation the rear quarter glass pops outward and the power windows unfurl with the press of a button. Adjacent to the climate system is a Kenwood head unit. It works like a charm and supplies the cabin with tunes to better your road trip. The headliner is in above-average shape, as are the carpets and the door cards have resisted major abuse over the years. The seats are in good nick, too, and lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The rear tailgate opens wide for easy cargo loading and the optional third row can be removed or nicely tucks into the d-pillar for additional storage. That’s not to say the cabin is perfect as we wanted to note the power folding function of the driver mirror no longer works, and there are two tiny holes on the driver and passenger seat bottom, but they are hard to notice. On the positive side, the interior is in good nick otherwise, and the OEM maintenance booklets have been retained, and come with the vehicle as part of its purchase.

Mechanical Overview

Body on frame in its construction, this Land Cruiser is built to last. The same can be said for its engine, the 5VZ-FE. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.4L churns to life care of a new 12v battery. A new fuel filter and spark plugs work to maximize fuel economy and one of our trained techs refreshed the V6 with new valve cover gaskets. New intake gaskets were also installed and the quad-cam engine feels as strong as an ox. Power is fed through a stout automatic transmission that shifts properly, and is geared for city and interstate usage. The transfercase offers the surefootedness of FullTime 4WD. For low traction scenarios a center locker can be engaged and low range is on standby. The suspension is soft and able to handle the rigors of daily use and abuse. We replaced both front shocks for better ride quality and performed an alignment to promote proper tire wear. ABS brakes confidently slow down this truck and the power steering is light and on point. New steering rack bushings and a rebuilt steering rack add some peace of mind and grip is handled by four new 31″ Falken tires mounted and balanced at each corner. Turn key and ready to rock, this Prado is the perfect year round SUV!
