Interior Overview
This Surf features a simple and spacious cabin. It includes a few OEM and aftermarket upgrades, including a BOSS audio headunit upgrade. Complete with Bluetooth and American FM radio stations, this unit is far more capable than the standard-issue Japanese radio. The adjacent digital automatic climate control is also intuitive to operate and doles out cold A/C and hot heat on command. The dashboard is in great shape and lacks any large imperfections aside from a spot of typical peeling around the glovebox. Dual SRS airbags are standard, and the driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. Power back glass, electric windows, power locks, and power folding side mirrors all work in typical Toyota fashion making daily use more enjoyable. The tan upholstery is in above-average shape and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. Rear occupants can find the ideal seating position courtesy of reclining seat backs, which weren’t offered on our 4Runners. The rear seats also split fold, and tumble forward to create a flat loading floor for larger cargo accommodations. The soft plastics, door cards, and headliner have resisted major abuse over the years, and even a maintenance booklet and OEM carpeted floor mats are included with the purchase of the vehicle. Aside from a few minor headliner stains, this one is a gem, and it’s clear it was cared for well in Japan.
Mechanical Overview
The 5VZ-FE under the bonnet is a thing of beauty. It’s known for its longevity, and with a laundry list of recent service performed in house this one should be primed and ready to eclipse half a million miles! Fresh off a brand new timing belt and water pump installation, this 3.4 cranks over with haste care of a new 12v battery. New valve cover gaskets keep the lubricant from the fresh oil and filter service internal, and we added a new thermostat and flushed in fresh coolant while we were in there. We installed new accessory belts, six new spark plugs, and the V6 purrs through a factory optional TRD Catback exhaust. A new engine air filter maximizes power, alongside new lower intake manifold gaskets, and with the maintenance performed it runs like a top, all the way up to highway speeds. It sends power through a tough automatic gearbox that shifts like it should. The driver can select between 2WD and 4WD on the fly, and a center locker and low range are on hand for any off-road escapades. We bolstered the 4WD system with new front CV axles and axle seals to get the power to the ground. The suspension and steering received a substantial overhaul, and we installed new Eibach lifted shocks and springs on all four corners. To bolster the changes in geometry, we also installed new front swaybar endlinks, front lower control arms, and lower ball joints. The rear end was refreshed with new rear upper and lower control arms, and new swaybar links too. The steering rack also received a hefty refresh. We rebuilt the rack with new seals, and reassembled the unit with new inner and outer tie rods, rack boots, bushings, and all new power steering fluid. To ensure every mechanical system was addressed, we also installed new front brake pads and rotors. The improved ride is noticeable and feels connected and predictable for an SUV. The power steering is direct and on point, and we capped off this impressive maintenance with a fresh four wheel alignment. The wide 16″ wheels are wrapped in brand new 33″ Falken rubber.
