The Japanese have designed and produced some top-tier sports cars over the years, but the Silvia is at the top of the list. Tactile, balanced, and versatile, the S15 chassis never fails to bring a smile to the face of an enthusiast. This 1999, one-owner, Spec S proves you don't need a high-horsepower engine to attain driving nirvana. Powered by a zippy SR20DE, this manual, rear-drive coupe looks great, and drives even better. Finished in a stately Sparkling Silver (WV2), and set off by OEM rainguards, the body is in good shape overall. Aside from a rear bumper replacement at some time in Japan, and a few minor chips, dings, and scuffs, there is little to kvetch about. Fresh off a recent service, this sporty little Nissan is turn key and ready to roll, and boasts a mere 32k verified and documented miles on the ticker. Perfect as a daily driver, autocross all-star, or wicked weekend cruiser this Japanese Classic is the real deal.
The interior of the Silvia is more modern and has held together better than the generations that preceded it. The ergonomics are decent and it feels uncluttered overall. Front occupants benefit from dual SRS airbags and the driver receives a tilt adjustable steering column an aftermarket gear shift lever. The dashboard lacks any fading and distortion and the center stack is close by and at hand. An OEM audio system system belts out the tunes and the clarity is above average. The digital climate control below is simple to operate and doles out cold A/C and piping hot heat on demand. The power folding mirrors, power locks, and power windows all function making daily use more enjoyable. The door cards are in great shape and the seats are trimmed in a black and gray cloth. They lack any rips, stains, or tears and are supportive feeling. The headliner and carpets are in good shape, too, and aside from a few tiny nicks on the dash from a nav mount, there is little to nitpick. It even has the Japanese manuals on hand that reside in the glovebox.
With its near 50/50 weight distribution, the Silvia is known for its balance and reflexive handling. This S15 is powered by Nissan's SR20DE four cylinder engine. The 163hp mill is fresh off an oil and filter service. Thanks to a new 12v battery the 2.0L churns to life quickly and sets into a confident idle. A new engine air filter and new fuel filter work to maximize mpg and power and the four-banger is linked to a close ratio five sped manual gearbox. It's rewarding to row up and down the gears and acceleration can be described as peppy. Power is fed to the rear wheels and this Silvia was optioned with a desirable OEM LSD. The steering is lightly weighted and communicative and the brakes are confident. New rear shocks and new front caster arms have been installed by one of our trained techs to refresh the ride and this S15 should be able to handle the rigors of daily use and abuse. The factory wheels are wrapped in knee-deep rubber and a fresh alignment should prolong their life by a fair amount!
