Exterior Overview

The 90 series Land Cruiser is the perfect Japanese Classic for the modern age. It’s similar in size and stature to newer crossovers and SUV’s, which makes it an ideal candidate for daily commutes, weekend road trips, and errand-running. This 1999 TX Limited is more appealing to the discerning enthusiast, as it features a coveted turbodiesel manual drivetrain. Finished in Imperial Jade Mica/Gray (K80) this stalwart SUV is set off by OEM rainguards, an optional front bumper protector, and a set of spiffy 16″ directional alloys. Save for a few cosmetic imperfections, dings, and loss of gloss in some of the paint, the exterior condition is in good shape overall. Savvy shoppers will value the 94k miles on the clock over all else, however, and this lovely Landy is fresh off a comprehensive recent service here at the shop. Interior Overview

This eight-seater is ideal for families on the go and adventurous types. ABS and dual SRS front airbags are standard equipment, which is a relief when carrying precious cargo. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and a trick OEM field monitor stands front and center, although there is a bit of fading on the display. It delivers information about the outside conditions such as the direction of travel, ambient temperature, and even includes a clinometer for your off-road escapades. Pilots of all sizes can find the ideal driving position thanks to a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. For those who plan to enjoy this rig year-round, an automatic climate system is within arm’s reach. The A/C is cold, and piping hot heat isn’t far behind for the cooler months. If you prefer more natural ventilation, the windows all power down with the press of a button and the rear quarter glass butterflies outward to supplement natural airflow. Other electric niceties include power folding side mirrors and power locks. The OEM optional audio works well in typical Toyota fashion, and can sufficiently drown out your passengers in the back. The patterned grey upholstery is in good shape and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The matching material can be found in the door cards. The second row can split fold, and slide forward to accommodate larger cargo, and the third row can be completely removed or stowed up against the d-pillar. The carpets and headliner are in good shape, and aside from some light wear to the door cards, and a non operational moonroof, it’s hard to complain about the cabin.

Mechanical Overview

While the Prado does bear the Land Cruiser maneplate, most of the running gear is shared with the 3rd generation 4Runner, making servicing these righteous rigs a walk in the park. Of course, the intercooled 1KZ-TE engine was never offered for sale here in the states, but with bulletproof construction, a recent service in-house and plenty of aftermarket support this 3.0 should happily chug along for years. The engine cranks over with haste and idles confidently, thanks to a fresh oil and filter service and all new accessory belts. A fresh coolant flush helps regulate internal temperatures and should keep you covered for preventative maintenance. The turbo diesel powerplant shows no hesitation getting up to and maintaining highway speeds, with plenty of down low torque on the ready to propel you out of sticky situations. The 5 speed manual transmission is silky smooth, and the gear selector benefits from new bushings to keep changes rapid and direct. A selective transfer case allows the full time 4wd system to switch between high and low gear, with a locking center diff option for any off road emergencies. New front CV axles and axle seals were also installed to bolster the drivetrain. For a rugged SUV, the ride quality is surprisingly plush, and the factory suspension allows for plenty of ground clearance to clear road imperfections large and small. To help this Prado ace state safety inspection, both front swaybar bushings were replaced, as were the front lower ball joints. A new right rear caliper keeps the ABS system bolstered and we even installed four new 31″ Falken tires to make the journey ahead comfortable and carefree for tens of thousands of miles to come!
