Exterior Overview

Ask any Toyota enthusiast to name their ideal Hilux Surf, and the chances are this 1999 SSR-X will almost match it to a T. It sports the ever-desirable 5-speed manual gearbox, an intercooled turbodiesel powerplant, and rare factory cosmetics, including Sunfire Red/Silver (K88) paint. Set off by an OEM graphics package, an OEM optional front bumper guard with multicoat fog lamps, factory rainguards, and 16″ aftermarket alloys, a stylish Surf like this only comes around once in a blue moon. Save for some minor stone chips and the occasional ding, the cosmetics are in good shape overall, and with some substantial service performed, this truck drives even better than it looks. Best of all, it boasts an impressive 85k miles on the clock, which are verified and documented to sweeten the deal. Interior Overview

A substantial amount of ground clearance grants easy access into the cabin, and with a slew of useful power equipment, premium materials, and comfortable amenities for all passengers, this Hilux Surf’s cockpit is a swell place to be. Finished in a durable grey cloth, the seating surfaces are clean throughout, with no rips, stains or tears. The fabric is actually in above average shape, and the same can be said for the condition of the dashboard. Revamped for its ’99 facelift, the center stack was reworked to meet the demands of modern daily driving. This includes an updated digital climate control display, which still cycles cold A/C into the cabin thanks to a new condenser. Heat is hot, and a functional OEM audio screen pumps out the tunes. The biggest change comes to the cupholders, which were relocated from beneath the climate vents to next to the center console. Rear heat is standard for your passengers, as is reclining seatbacks. The cabin is a safe place to be too, with dual front SRS airbags. Power windows, locks, and power folding side mirrors are fully operable, and this Surf shares the same party trick as a normal 4Runner with its sliding rear window. The headliner is clean throughout, and the carpets are protected by their original factory floormats. To help protect your investment, even the owner’s manuals, maintenance booklets, and the original audio remote are handy!

Mechanical Overview

Sure, the body on frame chassis can withstand its fair share of abuse, but the real value in this Surf is in the mechanicals. Some could say it’s what’s on the inside that counts, and our trained technicians have given this turbodiesel a thorough once-over to be turn-key ready. It turns over with haste, care of two new 12v batteries, and settles into a smooth idle. We installed a new fuel filter to keep contaminants out of the diesel, and we replaced the fuel filter and engine air filter so the four-banger runs seamlessly. The 3.0TD is linked to a manual gearbox that allows you to gain full control over the diesel’s broad torque curve and powerband. The driver can select between 2WD and 4WD on the fly, and a center locking differential and low range can be utilized for your off-road escapades. Also replaced on the lift were the front CV axles and axle seals, which we installed after a front diff fluid flush. The suspension received a healthy refresh and numerous upgrades. New inverted Eibach shocks with 2.5-inch lift springs were added, and we took care of new front lower control arms and ball joints, rear upper and lower control arms, and installed new sway bar links and bushings. It drives like a dream and tracks straight as an arrow thanks to a fresh alignment. New inner and outer tie rods were also installed to make dialing in the fresh alignment a bit easier. The wheels have been wrapped in new 33″ Falken rubber. The tires look mean as all getout, and throughout all the lands, we think discerning Toyota enthusiasts will go nuts over this one of a kind 4×4!
