Exterior Overview
During the pandemic, the Delica became the unofficial poster child for the overlanding boom, and it’s safe to say its popularity has done nothing but skyrocket ever since. If you’re looking to get into van life, this 1999 would be a swell choice, as it shares an engine with USDM Mitsubishi models, and touts the same award-winning Super Select 4WD that can go nearly anywhere. It also has some quirky options us Americans yearn for, like a sleek Crystal Lite roof, and versatile seating arrangements to make any Grand Caravan jealous. Best of all, the 63k miles on the clock are verified, documented, and should give the next owner good peace of mind about this van’s longevity. Finished in Coronado Sand Metallic/Grey Metallic (A26/A37) it looks the part too, set off by an integrated front bumper guard, OEM rainguards, and 15″ WEDS alloys. Save for some rock chips, and minor scuffs and dings, the cosmetics are in good shape overall, but you certainly shouldn’t feel guilty about dragging this van through the brush. Japanese records also note that the rear left quarter panel and hatch were replaced at some point. Ideal as an overlanding office, weekend trail cruiser, or a spacious and safe daily driver for the family, the Delica is a Japanese Classic that does it all!

Interior Overview
The cabin caters to the adventurous, even if your adventures typically end at the local strip mall with a gaggle of kids in the back. The seating arrangements are among the most versatile we’ve seen, and a full slate of power equipment leaves little to be desired for daily use. The grey cloth upholstery is darn tough, and shows no major rips, stains, or tears from daily use. This facelifted model includes improved power switchgear, and some added safety equipment, like dual SRS airbags. The driver can command power windows, locks, and electric folding side mirrors from up front, and rearward occupants can trigger the power retractable sunshades to let in plenty of natural light. There’s also an electric sunroof up front to funnel natural ventilation into the cabin. If you prefer ice cold A/C or hot heat, a digital dual-zone climate control system is easy to command, which services passengers in all three rows. For campsite camaraderie, the middle captain’s chairs can swivel to face the rear. All three rows also fold flat if you need to catch a quick snooze. OEM keeps the cabin supplied with tunes, and the dash materials, door cards, carpet, and headliner are all in good shape. Still, on a vehicle of this vintage, perfection isn’t possible and we wanted to note some pilling and wear on the driver’s seat bottom, as well as some minor wear on the leather wrapped steering wheel. Still, we think the condition of this cabin is really impressive, especially by modern car standards, and the factory carpet mats are included up front to sweeten the deal!

Mechanical Overview
Under the hood, a stout 6G72 engine provides propulsion. Keen enthusiasts might recognize this powerplant from USDM Mitsubishi models, which means the overall ownership experience on this van is automatically easier than one might expect. Our trained technicians have taken care of a comprehensive service to get you ready for the road ahead, and this Delica cranks over swiftly, care of a new 12v battery. From there, it went under the knife for a comprehensive timing belt and water pump service. This should save the next owner some serious coin on preventative maintenance, as we also tended to new valve cover gaskets, spark plugs, and a new engine air filter and fuel filter while we were in there. The engine oil and filter were also replaced, for good measure. The engine makes sufficient power and torque, making highway hauls a breeze, and power is sent straight to an automatic gearbox, which shifts smoothly. Power is distributed care of a Super Select 4WD transfercase. We replaced the output seal, and this cutting-edge unit allows the driver to switch between 2WD and 4WD on the fly. It also has an option to lock the center differential and engage low gearing if you get stuck. The suspension on this van is comfortable, and benefits from new shocks in the rear. The other suspension components passed VA state safety inspection with flying colors. The power steering is direct, and this Delica can come to a screeching halt thanks to new front brake pads and rotors. Last but certainly not least, the aftermarket alloys were wrapped in fresh Falken tires, which should keep you glued to the pavement for tens of thousands of miles to come!
