The N180 generation Surf is our best-selling platform at Japanese Classics. Capable, handsome, and safe, these helpful haulers are built to stand the test of time. This 1998 SSR-G is a wonderful truck, and is finished in Desert Dune (1A5) over Graphite two-tone. Aside from a few dings, chips, and scuffs this SUV is in good shape and is set off by menacing black OEM refinished alloys, a stylish rear factory spoiler, OEM spare tire swingarm, and some subtle rear privacy tint. Powered by the same V6 as our stateside models, this turn-key five-seater is fresh off a recent service that includes a new water pump and timing belt! At a mere 139k verified and documented miles, the quad-cam engine is barely broken in and feels healthy as a horse. Nicely equipped and rewarding to drive, this Toyota would make for an ideal year-round daily driver, neat weekend cruiser, or tough off-road playtoy. A Japanese Classic SUV for the ages, this nearly bulletproof platform has aged with grace!

The Surf has a simple cabin layout and some decent features. The front occupants benefit from dual SRS airbags and loads of head and legroom. An adjustable lumbar support makes longer hauls more comfortable and pilots of all sizes can find the ideal driving position thanks to a tilt-adjustable steering column. The MOMO steering wheel mounted atop it adds a sportier touch to the otherwise purpose built cabin and feels good in the palms of your hands. Power folding mirrors, rear glass, door locks, and electric side windows all work as advertised and make daily use enjoyable. The JVC Bluetooth headunit is close at hand and works like a charm as does the automatic climate control system. Cold A/C and piping-hot heat are great for year-round use. If you prefer more natural ventilation the power sunroof can retract and vent at a moment's notice. Right by those controls sits the illuminated OEM field monitor that displays the outside conditions and direction of travel. The Cognac-colored upholstery is in good shape and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The middle row split folds, and tumbles forward for larger cargo accommodations. When reversing the driver can also press a button to drop down a mirror from the rear spoiler, so that you don't crunch the Elantra behind you when parallel parking. The headliner, door cards, and carpets have withstood the past 25 years without sustaining major abuse, and as a whole, this rig seems nicely cared for. That is not to say this Hilux is perfect, as we did want to note a small crack on the center armrest and some light plastic wear. Still, at this age, the cabin is leagues better than most used American SUVs and should suit its next occupants well.

Under the skin, this Surf is almost identical to our US 4Runner models. Sure there are a few upgrades over a stock US model, like the optional center locker, but as a whole, the ownership of these vehicles is as seamless as it gets. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the V6 whirrs to life thanks to a new 12v battery. A new engine air filter, spark plugs, and fuel filter work to keep the 3.4L running tip top and a new radiator is keen to handle the thermal management. Best of all one of our trained techs has performed the expensive and complicated timing belt and water service. This will add plenty of peace of mind for the new owner in case an immediate road trip is planned. The 5VZ-FE is linked to a smooth-shifting automatic gearbox and selective transfer case. For pavement use, 2WD will ensure the best MPG and acceleration but when inclement weather presents itself, 4WD can be clicked on. For a beach outing or intense snowfall, a low range and center locker will keep you treading forward. Highway driving is comfortable and the suspension is predictable and touts loads of ground clearance. The ABS brakes are confident, too, and the OEM 16" alloys are all wrapped in new 31" Falkens at all four corners. They ride great, quiet down road noise, and should last for tens of thousands of miles to come!
