The J100 makes everyone happy and is the consummate overachiever. It’s refined, spacious, safe, and easy to maintain. For those who require a truck that will get you where you need to go, a Land Cruiser is hard to beat, and the nameplate is synonymous with bulletproof reliability. This 1998 is also menacing looking, with its one-off Baringo Black paint. Our VX Limited is set off by tinted rainguards, LED taillights, and a set of refinished 16″ aftermarket alloys for good measure. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs, the body is in good shape, and this V8 beast is fresh off a recent service. Boasting only 78k verified and documented miles on the ticker, this terrific Toyota is barely broken in. Perfect as a year-round family hauler, this rig could also pull double duty at Moab or on the bound down the beach with the best of them! Collectible, capable, and cool, this 4×4 is a Japanese Classic through and through!
Interior Overview
The cabin was clearly cared for overseas and includes a few handy upgrades. The seats have been protected by fitted leather seat covers, which dress up the cabin a touch. We also wanted to note a modern touchscreen Pioneer radio upgrade with American FM stations and integrated Bluetooth. Upon entry, the driver is greeted with a tilt-adjustable steering column and electric lumbar support. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS airbags are standard equipment. The center stack is close by and within arm’s reach. The auto climate control system is easy to operate and doles out piping hot heat and cold A/C. If you prefer more natural ventilation, the rear quarter glass pops outward, the side windows are electric, and a large panoramic moonroof can tilt and retract. To make daily use more enjoyable, power locks and power mirrors are equipped and work as advertised, aside from the power folding feature of the passenger mirror. Cruise control is standard, too, and makes those long highway hauls more manageable. The headliner is in good shape, as are the door cards, and the carpets have survived the past 25 years with only a touch of light staining. On the positive side, we have the OEM carpet mats on hand to keep the floors protected against future spills and stains.
Mechanical Overview
This tough truck is powered by a durable and smooth V8 engine. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 4.7L springs to life immediately courtesy of a new 12V battery. A new engine air filter, fuel filter, and a set of spark plugs and coil packs were installed as part of our tune up, allowing the 2UZ-FE runs right as rain. It’s connected to a stout automatic gearbox and full-time 4WD transfer case. For off-road excursions, a center locker and low range are on standby to keep momentum moving forward. It gets up to highway speeds quickly, and when you need to slow down, ABS is standard, as are the large disc brakes. It rides like a dream, and the long wheelbase distributes bumps impressively well. One of our trained techs refreshed the suspension with new rear upper and lower control arms. The power steering is light and easy to articulate and has been rehabbed with a rack rebuild. New fluid was flushed in, new bushings installed, and new inner and outer tie rods were installed. A fresh alignment was then performed, and this hauler tracks straight as an arrow. Lastly, we mounted and balanced four new Falken all-terrain tires at each corner. The new rubber looks mean, quells road noise, and should last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
