Exterior Overview
Ever since Toyota’s HiAce became legal to import in the US, the model has been a smash hit amongst van life enthusiasts and passionate Toyota die-hards. These vans make for killer daily drivers, but it’s no secret that a traditional cabover model lacks the crash safety and stability needed at our higher US interstate speeds. This 1998 RegiusAce mitigates these concerns with a front-engine layout, a longer wheelbase, and the same well-appointed, versatile interior that pleases pilots and passengers alike. Unique yet subtle, this eight-seater is finished in a lovely White Pearl/Silver Metallic (2EB). Adorned by a an optional rear spoiler, factory rainguards, and a functional and fun rear lollipop mirror, this van is super stylish, save for a few light chips, dings, and scuffs associated with normal use. It’s also logged a mere 103k miles over the years, which are verified, documented, and are a key indicator this trusty Toyota is barely broken in. Perfect for adventurous types, families on the go, and daily drivers alike, this Japanese Classic van is a premium and reliable transporter!
Interior Overview
The cabin is filled with premium materials, factory upgrades, and useful power amenities. Unlike its cabover sibling, this front-engine version benefits the driver with a flat loading floor, making travel throughout the cabin simple. The long wheelbase also lends itself to increased interior cargo volume. The driver slides into the cabin thanks to a tall ride height and a tilt adjustable steering column allows the pilot to find the ideal driving position. For daily use, power folding mirrors and power locks work in typical Toyota fashion, with keyless entry handy to make cabin access seamless. The dashboard design is clean and simple, with dual zone digital climate controls within arms reach. The system has separate settings for those riding in the rear, which can be flicked on with the press of a button. The heat is piping hot in case seasonal cruising is in order, and for the spring and summer ahead the A/C blows ice cold. For those who prefer more natural ventilation, the side glass pops outward, the power windows retract downward, and two massive sunroofs can be opened. The front unit is manual and can be tilted upward, and the rear panoramic moonroof slides back, revealing a view of the heavens above. It’s convenient that the gray cloth seats convert into a sleeping surface, and it makes weekend getaways off the grid a cakewalk. Upgraded Pioneer audio is close by to soundtrack your drive, and the audio quality is above average for its age. The aforementioned upholstery is in good shape and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The material is soft too, and long hauls can be had in comfort, regardless of where you may be seated. The front captains chairs have integrated armrests, and like the middle row, they can also swivel 180 degrees to face rearward. The rear row was removed in Japan, giving you a head start on your overland buildout. The cargo area is in good shape and the headliner, carpets, and door cards have withstood the past 27 years without sustaining major abuse. Even the owners manual, maintenance booklet, a spare key and OEM optional carpet mats are included with the purchase!
Mechanical Overview
Under the bonnet, the 1KZ is a fine choice to propel this people-mover. This turbodiesel model is frugal on fuel, and utilizes a simple design with plenty of readily available parts. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.0L turns over with haste. A new fuel filter was screwed on, and we also dropped in a new engine air filter for good measure. The 1KZ is linked to a stout automatic gearbox that feeds torque straight to both axles. Acceleration is impressive for a van of this vintage and the low-end torque from the diesel pays dividends when blasting around town. We also performed a fluid exchange on the rear differential to bolster the drivetrain. The factory suspension is comfortable, even on longer hauls, and to benefit the next US owner we’ve rehabbed the power steering system with a fresh rack rebuild. We replaced the seals, and reassembled the rack with new inner and outer tie rods, steering rack boots, and rack bushings. Fresh power steering fluid was also flushed in to make maneuvering this van a walk in the park. It slows down confidently thanks to new rear brake pads and standard ABS. Grip comes from four new Toyo all-terrain tires that have plenty of tread to propel you across loose surfaces. To prolong tire life, we aligned this rig to factory specs and sent it down the road to complete its VA state safety inspection. Turn key and ready to rock, this hauler is leagues better than a Sienna!
