Exterior Overview
We are incredibly privileged to be able to offer such a wide array of fantastic Toyota trucks and SUV’s, and with a lengthy production run, fantastic factory specs, and airtight condition overall, the KZN185 Surf continues to be one of our most popular sport utilities! This 1998 takes things up a notch, boasting a desirable factory intercooler, a brand new lift, and some fancy factory cosmetics and niceties. With only 82k miles on the clock, this SSR-X limited is barely broken in, too. Finished in Pepper White (850), this Hilux is set off by a snazzy roof rack, an optional OEM spare tire swingarm, factory rainguards, an OEM sport hood, and a brand new Eibach 2″ lift. Multipiece wheels round off the aesthetic, and save for a few minor cosmetic imperfections and a noted prior front bumper replacement, this truck has the aesthetics to make most enthusiasts go nuts! There’s a lot to love about the 1KZ-TE engine under the hood, but we consistently praise this model for its frugality. Stylish, sporty, and reliable as all get out, this is a special Japanese Classic for so many reasons.
Interior Overview
The interior is in good shape, and Toyota really knew how to design a cockpit to withstand the test of time. The Limited charcoal cloth upholstery is in good shape overall, which is a rare find on any 25 year old sport-utility. The same can be said for the condition of the dash, which has resisted peeling, fading, or UV distortion, and safety conscious occupants benefit from dual SRS airbags up front for a bit of extra peace of mind. The center stack is easy to navigate and intuitively designed. A simple to use climate control system sits front and center, pumping out cold A/C and hot heat on command, ideal for those in seasonal climates. There’s also a USDM Boss audio system that pumps in your tunes via Bluetooth connectivity. The driver has access to quite a few comfort options and power amenities. Power windows unfurl with haste, and in true 4Runner fashion the rear glass powers down too. Also operable are power locks and side mirrors. Unique to Japan-market examples, the rear seats recline slightly, and just like our USDM variants, the rear bench can fold flat to stuff in some additional cargo. The headliner is tidy, and the carpets have resisted excessive wear and tear apart from a few light stains. Sleek factory floor mats have been included, and we’ve retained the rare molded factory mats to preserve this Hilux’s history. Overall, this Surf is clean where it counts, and despite some scuffs and smudges in the cargo area, we think the next owner will be pleased with the interior condition.
Mechanical Overview
The 1KZ-TE is the holy grail of Hilux Surf engines and the added intercooler increases performance and the longevity of the 3.0L. This one is fresh off an oil and filter service and starts up promptly, care of two new 12v batteries. With all of our diesel vehicles, we always swap in a new fuel filter and we also replaced the engine air filter for good measure. New accessory belts keep squeaks and slips to a minimum, and we installed a new A/C compressor or condenser to keep things chilly during the warmer months. Under throttle, the slight power bump on the intercooled engine really shows, and it soars up to highway speeds in a snap. The automatic transmission shifts properly, benefits from a new trans mount, and is stoutly built. The transfercase offers the ability to drive in 2WD or 4WD while a center locker can be engaged for the roughest terrain. A new Eibach Pro Truck lift gives you a couple extra inches of ground clearance, and the ride quality is predictable and connected for an SUV, The power steering is light and on point, although a couple bushings on the rack are starting to show their age. The ABS brakes feel confident, and the 16″ wheels are all wrapped in new all-terrain 33″ Falken rolling stock. The new rubber quiets down the ride and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come, and a fresh alignment was performed to make the most of this freshly lifted beast!
