For the second iteration of the iconic Celsior model, Toyota really pulled out all the stops. Making the vehicle safer, more powerful, and increasing the interior space were all prioritized, and this 1997 is a wonderful example of a UCF20. Finished in Toyota Black (202), and accented by a set of subtle OEM rainguards, the paint is in good shape aside from the normal light dings, chips, and scratches associated with normal use. Fresh off a recent service, this sedan is offered with an impressive 32k verified and documented miles. Compared to where stateside LS400s sell, this well-equipped Toyota can be had at fraction of the price. Reliable, refined, and turn-key ready to roll this Celsior would make for a killer daily driver, weekend cruiser, or a clean platform for a VIP build.

The cabin is about as clean as any Celsior we have seen in recent memory. Electric amenities surround the occupants and the driver is pampered. An electric steering column, power front seats, electric windows, locks, and power-folding mirrors are all standard and work as advertised. Even though this vehicle was produced prior to the new millennia, it even has a functional TV/Nav/Radio setup that came from the factory. Mounted adjacently is the dual-zone digital automatic climate control system. You guessed it, it works too and thanks to an A/C recharge the Celsior would be ideal for a summer getaway. The gray cloth seats are in the above-average nick. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears and are soft to the touch. Comfortable on long drives they were obviously cared for in a prior life. The same can be said about the door cards, headliners, and carpets which have withstood major abuse over the past quarter-century. New for 97, dual SRS side airbags match the dual front airbags and add some reassurance when behind the wheel. Even the expensive optional OEM carpet mats are still on hand, which is a clear sign this sedan was cared for in a prior life.

Under the skin, the Celsior is about as stout as it gets. These vehicles were overengineered from their inception and several have logged over a million miles. The heart of this four-door is a lighter and more powerful version of the 1UZ-FE from the UCF10. The 4.0L is fresh off an oil and filter service and starts up with the twist of the key. A new 12v battery has been installed and should last for a few more years to come. The V8 purrs and is incredibly smooth. Power is fed through a smooth-shifting automatic to the rear wheels. It accelerates well and the cabin is peacefully silent, even when under heavy load. These sedans are about as good on the highway as anything we sell and the soft factory suspension isn't intimidated by even the largest of potholes. It even has factory cruise control in the event if you plan to frequently log some miles on the interstate. The steering is feather-light and power-assisted. The Celsior goes exactly where you point it, but don't expect the feedback you would get from a Miata. The brakes have been refreshed while up on our lift. One of our trained techs has installed new rear pads and the massive sedan can safely slow down to manageable speeds when you need to reel it in. Lastly, we mounted and balanced four new Falken tires, which quieted down the ride a touch and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
