There are very few JDM performance vehicles that can be had at an affordable price point these days. This 1997 Legacy is one of them, and it boasts a stickshift, copious amounts of room for the family, and a potent twin-turbo powerplant. Finished in a clean Alpine White (51E), the body is in good shape overall aside from a few light dings, chips, and scratches associated with normal use. Rocking some one-piece rainguards and upgraded OEM alloys, this sharp-looking estate exudes curb appeal. Offered with only 53k verified miles, this recently serviced wagon is turn-key ready to roll. For the enthusiast who values practicality, performance, and ease of ownership, this Japanese Classic is it!

The cabin is in above-average shape overall. It was cared for in a prior life in a very obvious way. The upholstery steals the show and is done in a gray textured cloth. The seats lack any major rips, stains, or tears and offer great support on long drives. The view of the road ahead is clear and unobstructed and this Legacy boasts dual front SRS airbags for some additional reassurance when behind the wheel. The dash lacks any cracking or distortion and a digital automatic climate control system is within reach. The A/C blows cold and the heat works like a charm too. An Alpine audio upgrade modernizes the interior and sounds fantastic, although we prefer the boxer burble. Power windows, electric folding mirrors, and power locks all make daily use much more enjoyable and were standard equipment. The headliner and door cards have resisted major abuse over the years but if we had to nitpick, we would point out the carpets have some light staining. Still, at 25 years of age, it's remarkable how well this cabin has held up.

The classic styling is pretty, although the flowing lines do obscure some serious performance underpinnings. Unlike lesser versions of the wagon, this GT-B is powered by the EJ20R variant of Subaru's boxer engine line. Packing 30 more HP than the standard trim, this one is fresh off an oil and filter service, and starts up promptly thanks to a new 12v battery. The EJ is connected to a manual transmission and symmetric AWD. The surefooted BG is ideal for winter use and would make for a decent daily driver as well. It's fun to row through the gears and the estate never struggles to get up to safe merging speeds. The engine has great top-end power breathes a bit better thanks to a new engine air filter. We also replaced the valve cover gaskets to keep the 2.0L full of lubricant. The suspension is compliant and predictable and the beefy Bilsteins insulate road imperfections from the cabin quite well. The brakes are equally confident and the power steering is light and on center. The 17" alloys all are wrapped in new Falken all-terrain tires at all four corners. The new rubber quiets down the ride and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come!
