Bridging the gap between the Hilux Surf and Land Cruiser models, this 1997 turbodiesel Prado is the perfect midsize Toyota SUV.

Exterior Overview

Bridging the gap between the Hilux Surf and Land Cruiser models, this 1997 Prado is the perfect midsize Toyota SUV. It’s also backed by an unstoppable intercooled turbodiesel, and a center locked 4WD drivetrain. It goes without saying this 90 series is capable, but it’s stylish too, and finished in a stately Jewel Green over Grey two-tone. Set off by chrome mirror caps, OEM side steps, privacy tint, and 16″ WEDS Keeler alloys, this Prado also boasts OEM rainguards and an optional fitted rear tire cover. Save for some nicks in the plastic and a few paint imperfections scattered throughout, this truck looks good overall and the 107k verified and documented miles on the clock only aid desirability. Spacious for the family, fun, and capable for a weekend off-road excursion, we have nothing but good things to say about the J95. It’s a bonafide Japanese Classic!

Interior Overview

Perhaps the biggest benefit of owning a classic 90’s Land Cruiser is the sheer amount of space and amenities that the cabin is able to offer. Cabin access is simplified thanks to functional keyless entry. Included is optional third-row seating, which comfortably allows for the transport of up to 8 passengers, with ample head and legroom available for all. The driver’s seat is a great place to be in this Prado, and a low-profile dashboard allows for superior visibility on the road. The dash materials are clean and crack-free as well, and dual SRS front airbags are standard for those who might be safety concious. An adjustable steering column allows for the driver to find the ideal piloting position, and the tall ride height is perfect for seeing over traffic. Fans of OEM equipment will be pleased to note that the factory field monitor is in good working order, and the rest of the power amenities function quite well, including a JVC audio system, and automatic climate control with Cold A/C and hot heat on tap. Power windows, power-folding mirrors, and power locks are all fully operational and make daily use a breeze, The middle row folds forward and quickly transforms into extra storage space if needed. While the interior certainly shows well for a 25-year-old vehicle, some defects are to be expected, and we must note some expected wear on the emergency brake boot, and light staining on the 3rd-row seat. Other than that, it’s hard to complain about the interior and we feel the new owner will be thoroughly impressed with the cabin’s condition. It even includes the Japanese owners manuals and maintenance booklets!

Mechanical Overview

While the Prado does bear the Land Cruiser nameplate, most of the running gear is shared with the 3rd generation 4Runner, making servicing these righteous rigs a walk in the park. Of course, the intercooled 1KZ-TE engine was never offered for sale here in the States, but with bulletproof construction, a recent service in-house, and plenty of support this 3.0 should happily chug along for years. The motor springs to life and idles confidently, thanks to a fresh oil and filter service and a new engine air filter and fuel filter to keep contaminants at bay. We also changed out the valve cover gasket and the half-moon seals up top. Lastly, one of our trained techs performed a coolant flush, so the 1K was up to the task of handling thermal management. The turbo diesel powerplant shows no hesitation getting up to and maintaining highway speeds, with plenty of down-low torque on the ready to propel you out of sticky situations. The automatic box is silky smooth and a selective transfer case allows the full-time 4WD system to switch between high and low gear, with a locking center differential option for any off-road emergencies. We also resealed the transmission pan for good measure. It sails up to highway speeds without breaking a sweat, and slows down confidently thanks to standard ABS brakes. For a rugged SUV, the ride quality is surprisingly plush, and the factory suspension allows for plenty of ground clearance and covers up road imperfections. We even installed 4 new 31″Falken tires to make the journey ahead comfortable and carefree for tens of thousands of miles to come!
