Exterior Overview
The year 1997 was a good one, and Toyota was smack dab in the middle of its heyday. When this HiAce rolled off the line, the economy in Japan was strong, as the bubble era faded into a distant memory. Premium people movers like this eight-seater van exemplify quality, reliability, and capability. Finished in a classic Super White over Flaxen Mica (2BH), this Super Custom is set off by factory graphics, a stylish rear spoiler, OEM chrome 15″ steel wheels, and OEM rainguards. Aside from a few light imperfections, the body is in good shape, and this turbodiesel-powered hauler is fresh off a recent service, and boasts only 140k verified and recommended miles on the clock. Spacious, well-optioned, and practical, this 4WD model would make for a competent year-round daily driver, cool weekend cruiser, or clean campsite companion. Efficient and determined, this is a useful and practical Japanese Classic that everyone can get behind!

Interior Overview
The cabin is spacious and filled with power features and flexible seating options. Access to the cockpit is made more seamless for all thanks to functional keyless entry. A highlight that deserves to be mentioned first is the optional triple moonroof suite. The three glass assemblies allow those within to view the heavens above. The climate control system, which pumps hot heat and cool A/C through the cabin, works like a charm. For those preferring natural ventilation, the side glass pops outward, and the front and back moonroof tilt upward. The middle panoramic glass can fully retract for a convertible-like experience. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column to find the ideal seating position. The cabover design is ideal for those who value visibility, and when driving this Hiace, you feel like you’re in a fishbowl. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading that typically plagues Toyotas of this era and dual SRS airbags are standard equipment. Power locks and power mirrors all work as they should, improving daily use. The cognac colored cloth upholstery is soft to the touch and in wonderful shape. The material lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. Entry to the rear is a stress free affair with the large sliding door. The unit also soft closes when left ajar so that your battery isn’t drained while you are out and about. The middle row can swivel 180 degrees to face the back, and the rear row slides fore and aft. That’s not to say the cabin is perfect, as the rear glass sprayer reservoir is damaged, and the passenger side power folding mirror function and Pioneer audio no longer operate. Still, at almost 30 years old, the cabin’s condition is above average, and we think the new owner will agree. Even the owner’s manual is still sitting in the glovebox!

Mechanical Overview
This mid-engined egg may look top-heavy, but the drivetrain resides low in the chassis, and the handling is actually quite good for a van. The 1KZ-TE engine is one of Toyota’s most legendary power units and is fresh off an oil and filter service. It springs to life courtesy of a new 12V battery, which will remain topped up on its charge thanks to a new alternator. A new fuel filter keeps unwanted contaminants out of the four-banger, and we have refreshed the 1K with a new valve cover gasket. Thermal efficiency is handled by a new radiator, and we flushed the fluid out during the change. The torquey turbodiesel is linked to a stout automatic gearbox. It shifts like it should, and this van hustles up to highway speeds without breaking a sweat. The 4WD system is full-time and these transporters are capable beach cruisers that offer loads of ground clearance. The suspension can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse and is soft and comfortable. New rear upper and lower sway bar link bushings were installed before it passed its state safety inspection. It tracks straight as an arrow thanks to a fresh alignment, and we’ve rebuilt the power steering rack and flushed the fluid so the steering wheel feel is light and on point. The brakes do a swell job of slowing this HiAce down, and grip is handled by four new Yokohama tires that we mounted and balanced at each corner. Freshly aligned, the new rubber quells road noise and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come. Turn key and ready to rock, this van is the ultimate ride for adventurous families or those with an affinity for seeing the great outdoors.
