Exterior Overview
The mid-90s were Toyota’s glory days. A whole slate of world-class SUVs were being produced, and the third-generation Hilux Surf was flying off dealer lots. There are many reasons for that, including the handsome styling, rugged durability, and top-tier reliability. This 1996 is also a top performer, and is equipped with an efficient and torquey turbodiesel. Fresh off a recent service, this rig boasts a mere 130k verified and documented miles on the ticker. Set off by an OEM spare tire swingarm, OEM 16″ alloys, and OEM rainguards, this Stellar Blue (8L7) example only shows a few minor dings, scuffs, and scratches from normal wear and tear. Ideal for off-roading enthusiasts, weekend adventures, and families on the go, this midsize SUV is a Japanese Classic down to the body on frame underpinnings. Collectible, capable, and cool, this affordable all-weather vehicle can be yours today!
Interior Overview
The cabin is simple, nicely optioned, and was cared for in a prior life overseas. Toyota added some safety features for this third-generation redesign, which include anti-protrusion door beams, dual SRS airbags, and ABS brakes. The dashboard lacks any cracking or distortion, and the center stack is close by and within arm’s reach. Drivers of all sizes can find the ideal seating position courtesy of a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. A Kenwood audio upgrade fills the cabin with tunes, and the automatic climate control above works like a charm, pumping in cold A/C and piping hot heat through the cabin. Power mirrors, electric locks, power windows, and power rear glass all work like a charm and make daily use more enjoyable. The Moon Mist gray seats are in above-average shape and lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The rear row 4-way reclines for optimal rear seat comfort. For flexible stoprage options, the same row can split fold, and tumble forward to create a flat loading floor. The headliner is in good nick, as are the door cards, and aside from some light carpet stains its hard to complain about the cabin’s condition. On the positive side, a set of OEM carpet mats is on hand to prevent additional spills and soiling, and the owners’ manuals and maintenance booklets are included with the purchase.
Mechanical Overview
Under the skin, this truck is just as beautiful as it is from the outside. A body-on-frame chassis is tough, and the 1KZ-TE powerplant is equally resilient. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the four-banger springs to life with the twist of the key. To aid ignition, a new 12v battery was installed, and we also replaced the fuel filter and engine air filter. The crossover tube had developed a hairline crack, and so we replaced that while taking care of the air cleaner. We also replaced the valve cover gasket, too. The 1K is linked to a stout automatic gearbox that shifts just as it should. The pilot can choose between 2WD and 4WD on the fly and a center locker and low range can be selected when the going gets tough. It gets up to highway speeds with ease, and it slows down equally well with its standard anti-lock brakes. It rides like a dream thanks to new rear shocks, and we also replaced the rear sway bar end links. The power steering is communicative and direct, and grip is handled by four new 31″ Falkens we mounted and balanced at each corner. The new rubber looks mean, quells road noise, and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
