A neck breaking rig wherever it goes, this Hiace is a Japanese Classic, from head to toe!

Exterior Overview

When you have an active lifestyle, you’ll need a vehicle to match. This 1996 HiAce will go everywhere with its incredible turbodiesel heart and Full-Time 4WD underpinnings. It’s got loads of space, numerous safety features, and rides like a luxury car. Finished in a stunning Tiger Eye Pearl (YR-651P) this eight seat hauler is set off by refinished factory alloys, OEM rainguards, and some snazzy custom vinyl that ties the aesthetic together. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and finish imperfections, the paint is in fine shape, and this Super Custom model is fresh off a recent service. Boasting only 135k miles, this classic Toyota has tallied a fraction of what our American models typically see, and is backed by a ton of good maintenance performed here at the shop. A neck breaking rig wherever it goes, this Hiace is a Japanese Classic, from head to toe!

Interior Overview

The cabin is massive and includes some flexible seating options, some decent power features, and a few upgrades. The cabover design lends itself to top tier viability from behind the wheel. The driver benefits from a tilt adjustable steering column to find the ideal driving position. Power windows, power locks and power mirrors all function making daily use more enjoyable. ABS brakes were spec’d on this van for those who value safety. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading and the glovebox is sizable as is the center console. The center stack includes the controls for the dual zone climate system. Rear occupants have their own controls. A suite of sunroofs let ample light into the cabin making it feel larger. The front and rear moonroofs operate although the middle one has given up the ghost. The patterned cloth seats are in above average shape and lack any major rips, stains or tears. The door cards and headliner are in good nick too. An Addzest radio works like a charm and adds some tunes to your commute. The rear bench was removed in Japan to accommodate extra cargo, which is ideal for any American buyer looking for an easy platform to overland out of. Sadly, no 27 year old cabin is perfect, and we wanted to note some wear to the touch points, an inoperable tachometer, and power mirrors which no longer electronically fold. Still, on a classic van this is a bit of nitpicking, as the condition of the cabin is good overall.

Mechanical Overview

The 1KZ-TE under the bonnet is the people’s champ and is delightful to own, drive, and maintain! These durable diesels are good on fuel, not overly complicated, and our trained technicians have given this one loads of good preventative maintenance and service so this HiAce is turn key and ready to roll. A new 12v battery and new glow plugs were chucked in to aid ignition, and we replaced the alternator to keep the system properly charged. New serpentine belts were also installed, and an engine air filter, fuel filter, and oil and filter service were performed for a necessary tune-up. Power and torque are prevalent, and this large displacement four banger has plenty of get up and go. A fresh fluid exchange keeps the automatic gearbox in tip-top shape, and power is sent to a full time AWD drivetrain. The suspension is comfortable and compliant, and we replaced both rear shocks and the rear swaybar link bushings so the van would pass its state inspection with flying colors. We also did the legwork of a fresh steering rack rebuild, and installed new inner and outer tie rods before it went back in the van. Front brake pads were installed, and we wrapped the refinished wheels in fresh Toyo rubber. It’s snazzy, matches the van’s aesthetic nicely, and should last for tens of thousands of miles of cruising to come!
