Exterior Overview
It’s common to see 3rd-generation 4Runner here in the US plodding down our highways and byways with over 300k miles. These trucks are robustly built, durable, easy to service, and have readily available parts and modifications Stateside. For those who are looking for a well-serviced, low-mileage example, this 1996 is perfect. Having logged a mere 62k verified and documented miles, this V6 Surf is barely broken in. As an SSR-G model, it’s also well equipped with a nicely optioned cabin that is spacious and ergonomic. Finished in a fresh coat of Midnight Purple (LP2), this Hilux is set off by Bridgestone multipiece alloys, an OEM spare tire swingarm, OEM rainguards, and a stylish rear spoiler. Aside from some minor imperfections, the body is in good nick and this terrific Toyota is fresh off a comprehensive service which included a new lift kit and timing belt and water pump service. Perfect as an all-weather daily driver, wicked weekend overlander, or fun family ferry, this Japanese Classic can take whatever you throw at it!
Interior Overview
This Surf’s cabin is well optioned, ergonomic, and in good shape overall. A couple of rare factory options are equipped, such as a functional field monitor, moonroof, power reverse mirror, 100w wall plug and a factory TV radio. All work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. Drivers of all sizes can find the ideal seating position courtesy of an adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS airbags are standard equipment. There is a tiny blemish on the dash from a Japanese nav mount, but it’s hardly noticeable. The center stack is close by and within arm’s reach. The automatic climate control system is intuitive to operate and delivers piping hot heat and cold A/C. If you prefer more natural ventilation, the rear glass and side windows roll down with the press of a button. The power mirrors work properly, aside from the power-folding option, and the power locks work just as they should. The seats are trimmed in a durable Moonmist cloth. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears and are in good shape. The rear bench can split fold, 4-way recline, and tumble forward to create a flat loading floor. The headliner, carpets, and door cards have resisted major wear over the years, and it’s clear the cabin was cared for in a life overseas. Even the owner’s manuals and maintenance booklets are included with the purchase of this fine steed!
Mechanical Overview
Under the skin, this truck is just as good as the exterior. A true ladder chassis underpins this Surf and can withstand loads of abuse. The same can be said for the stalwart 5VZ-FE providing propulsion. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.4L whirrs to life with the twist of the key. A new set of spark plugs aids combustion, and the 5VZ feels strong as an ox. One of our trained techs addressed a few oil leaks for the new owner. New valve cover gaskets and a front main seal were replaced so that the DOHC mill stays full of oil. Best of all, we addressed the most expensive preventive maintenance service there is! A new timing belt and water pump were installed, which will be good for another ten years and 90k miles. We also replaced the radiator and flushed the coolant so that the V6 could handle the thermal load. The powerplant is connected to a stout-shifting automatic gearbox. The driver can toggle between 2WD and 4WD on the fly. If sand, snow, or mud get in the way, a center locker and low-range 4WD can be utilized to keep momentum surging forward. It gets moving up to highway speeds without breaking a sweat. When you need to slow down, ABS is standard, and we have replaced the front brake hoses and performed a brake fluid flush to keep the pedal feel linear. It rides like a dream thanks to a host of suspension work. An Eibach lift kit adds a few inches to the ride height and handles large and small road imperfections with confidence. With the lift, we also replaced the front and rear lower control arms, the rear upper control arms, and the front sway bar end links. Additionally, we rehabbed the steering system. The rack was rebuilt with new seals, and new rack bushings and boots were installed. New fluid was swapped in, and new inner and outer tie rods were installed to help us dial in the proper alignment. The power steering is light and easy to articulate, and we wrapped the wheels in new 33″ Falken rubber. The new tires quell road noise, look mean, and should last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
