This 1996 Surf is a dynamic, fun, and downright sexy little rig. Finished in a Toyota Cement (1H5) over Black two-tone, this turbodiesel wonder is set off by a stylish rear OEM spoiler, privacy tint, and OEM refinished alloy wheels. Aside from a few light dings and imperfections, the paint is in good nick and this Hilux is fresh off a recent service. Boasting only 139k verified and documented miles, this diesel truck is barely broken in and turnkey ready to rock. Collectible, capable, safe, and spacious, these N185s make ideal year-round daily drivers, weekend cruisers, and everything in between. Japanese Classics like this are not only useful but highly desirable, fun to drive, and are easy to service, too!

The cabin is by no means barebones, like many SUVs of this era. The Surf boasts power windows, door locks, and electric side mirrors, which all operate properly. The driver can find the optimal driving position with a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. The dashboard houses dual SRS airbags for some added peace of mind and lacks any major distortion or cracking. The seats are comfortable and upholstered in a Moon Mist-colored cloth. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears, although we did want to note some light cuts on the driver's seat bottom and some additional steering wheel wear, too. The OEM audio works like a charm and is mounted below the automatic climate controls. The sound quality is surprisingly decent for a vehicle of this age. Cold A/C can be utilized for these dog days of summer and heat is on standby for later this year. For those who want more natural ventilation, the rear glass powers down fully. Out of the back hatch, there is a trick feature to note. There is a small under-mirror that powers down so that the driver can clearly see the rear bumper when reversing to park the Surf. Handy indeed, the folks at Toyota really thought of everything. The other option we love is the factory field monitor, which displays info such as barometric pressure, direction of travel, and outside temperature for those looking to hit the hills and may not have cell service. This SUV appears to have been cared for overseas, and the carpets and door cards have withstood the past 25 years without substantial wear. That's not to say the cabin is perfect as we wanted to note some light staining on the headliner, the driver-side power folder on the side mirror is inoperable, and some of the front climate vents are loose.

Under the angular and stylish bodywork is a robust body-on-frame platform that is tough as nails. The most efficient and potent engine offered is equipped in this example. The 1KZ-TE is fresh off a recent service and starts up with the twist of the key. Two new 12v batteries were installed while it was in our shop, and a new engine air filter and fuel filter were taken care of. So that the electronics stay powered all new accessory belts were installed and while we were in the engine bay we attended to the leaking valve cover and replaced it, too! The four-banger is linked to a smooth-shifting automatic gearbox. For tip-top fuel economy, the driver can choose to drive the rear axle alone. For snow and loose surfaces, 4WD can be engaged as can the optional center locker! Acceleration is impressive for an SUV, and around town this chassis is plenty peppy. The suspension inspires confidence and has tons of ground clearance for those planning on taking this midsize ute out wheeling. The power steering also is light and on point. New front inner and outer tie rods, new steering rack bushings, and an alignment ensure this Surf tracks straight as an arrow. The ABS brakes are unflappable, and the wheels are wrapped in new 31" Falken rubber at all four corners that will deliver tens of thousands of miles of all-weather grip to come!
