This 1996 Hilux Surf is an all-around performer. In inclement weather, out on sandy beaches, and commuting on the highway, it shines compared to other midsize SUVs. This turbodiesel version is fresh off a recent service, and touts a mere 149k verified and documented miles on the clock. Finished in Toyota's Stellar Blue over Gray two-tone (8L7) this striking example is complimented with an incredible factory graphics package, OEM rainguards, 16" aftermarket alloys, and subtle privacy tint. Not only stylish, but rugged and durable, this five-seater would also make for a killer daily driver, weekend escape vehicle, or a capable and unique weekend cruiser. Through and through, this SSR-X is a collectible and capable Japanese Classic!

The interior is filled with a few OEM upgrades like the exterior. The factory sunroof and OEM field monitor are functional upgrades not seen in all Surfs. A Sanyo TV/Radio can supply a soundtrack to drown out the kids and the driver also enjoys power locks, mirrors, and windows to make daily use more enjoyable. The dash lacks any distortion, which is common for these trucks, and both drivers and passengers have standard SRS front airbags. The cabin stays cool thanks to the automatic climate control and cold A/C. The rear hatch rolls down to provide a further breeze. The cloth seats are soft to the touch and lack any major rips, holes, or tears. The driver benefits from adjustable lumbar support, and unlike USDM 4Runners, the rear bench 4-way reclines for some added luxury. The middle seats also fold forward into a flat loading floor for maximum cargo capacity if you have a getaway planned. The door cards are in good shape as is the headliner and the carpets have withstood the past quarter century without sustaining major abuse. All in all this Hilux seems to have been cared for in a prior life, and it shows!

Built on the same frame as the 4Runner, parts are easy to come by and can be had inexpensively. This rig is powered by the legendary 1KZ-TE diesel. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.0L cranks to life care of a new 12v battery. To give the 1KZ-TE a quick refresh, the old valve cover gasket was replaced with a brand new one and the serpentine belts were replaced, too. A new fuel filter and air filter optimize the powerplants performance, and the engine is linked to a sturdy automatic gearbox. Acceleration is impressive for a ute from the mid-1990s, and this truck cruises comfortably on the highway. Around town, it's peppy, and the suspension handles ruddy tarmac with confidence. If you want to conquer some rough terrain an OEM center locker and low-range 4WD can be engaged at a moment's notice. The ABS brakes are tight and tidy and have been bolstered with a new master cylinder that was installed by one of our trained techs. The 16" alloys are wrapped in new 31" Falken all-terrain tires. The new rubber not only quiets down the ride but will provide tens of thousands of miles of grip for a while to come and match the exterior tough guy aesthetic perfectly!
