SUVs like this third-generation Hilux Surf are hot commodities here at Japanese Classics. With chilly fall and winter months on the horizon, enthusiasts are looking to these reliable, versatile, and economical 4x4's to get them through the sleet and snow. This 1996 SSR-V model is a wonderful example, sporting an efficient 3RZ-FE four-banger and steadfast 4WD. With only 114k verified/documented miles on the clock, this Surf is just getting broken in, and is ready for whatever stateside adventures await. Finished in Evergreen Pearl (751) over a One-Off Graphite, this N185 certainly looks tough, and the exterior styling is set off by a choice set of OEM rainguards, rear privacy tint, and a complementary set of refinished OEM alloys wrapped in new rubber beefy enough to traverse any terrain! Fresh off a recent service this Surf is a Japanese Classic through and through, and a turn-key beauty ready to do some serious duty.

While the exterior is nice, the interior certainly follows suit, and these N185s offer the space and amenities needed to comfortably transport all passengers. The dash is clean, with no unwanted cracks or peeling to be found, and the grey material perfectly complements the corduroy-esque upholstery on the seats. The cloth is free of any major rips and tears, with only some light bolster wear present on the driver's side. The carpets have withstood the past quarter century without sustaining major abuse and this Hilux even retains its original carpeted floor mats. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column, and dual SRS airbags up front provide for a little extra peace of mind behind the wheel. The center stack houses a Kenwood touchscreen headunit upgrade with USB functionality. Above, a fully operational automatic climate control system is close at hand, with blazing hot heat on the ready, and cold A/C too! A host of power amenities modernize the driving experience of this classic SUV a tad. Power windows, side mirrors, and power locks all work at the push of a button, and the power rear glass unfurls to make for some extra ventilation in the cabin. The rear seats recline a bit to allow passengers to catch some Z's while also folding all the way forward to accommodate some extra cargo space. The carpets and door cards have withstood the past 25 years without sustaining major abuse, and it appears the cabin was cared for in a prior life. Overall the interior is in good shape, and aside from some staining on the headliner and a nonworking sunroof, we think it'll do the job nicely.

No matter how you spec it, the third-generation Surf always proves to be a durable unit, and the four-cylinder powerplant is a more than respectable choice to power these super SUV's. Sharing most of its underpinnings with the USDM 4Runner, servicing is a breeze, and parts and maintenance can be handled as easily as you'd handle the US counterpart! The punchy four-cylinder engine cranks over without hesitation, care of a new 12V battery, and operation is smooth and whisper quiet. A new valve cover gasket ensures you won't lose a drop of lubricant, and this engine has no problem cruising up to comfortable highway speeds. The automatic transmission is just as stress-free, with the selective transfer case offering high and low gear options for whatever tricky terrain awaits. Our trained technicians have installed new steering rack bushings as well as a new right front axle to refresh the driveline, and new struts in the rear ensure that this suspension will continue to ride smoothly for miles and miles to come. The N185 Surf is one of the best driving trucks on our lot right now, and with 5 new Falken A/T tires installed it'll continue to be a force to be reckoned with on and off the road. Lastly, an alignment was performed to ensure long tire life and this Toyota now tracks straight as an arrow!
