1996 RZN185 Hilux Surf
There's no better option for all-season cruising than a dependable N185 Hilux Surf, with a real deal manual transmission! Devoid of any unnecessary power equipment and burdening technology, our 1996 SSR-X model is a fine example, and with only 99k verified documented miles on the clock, this one is barely broken in! Finished in Desert Dune Metallic (1A5), a silvery beige hue, the exterior shows well and stands out from plebeian stateside 4Runners thanks to OEM rainguards, a factory rear spoiler, FRP front grille, and an optional spare tire carrier. With no major defects to note aside from some light dings, stone chips, and minor paint fade, the exterior really is in fine shape for a 25-year-old vehicle, a clear sign this truck was cared for in its prior Japanese life. Efficient, durable, and four-season capable. This manual N185 is the essence of a true Japanese Classic.
The interior packs all the space and amenities you'd expect from Toyota's most popular mid-size SUV. The seats are trimmed in a durable patterned cloth, with corduroy accents, and show well aside from a few scattered burn holes and light stains on the front buckets. The rest of the interior materials look the part, and the upholstery remains clean from the headliner to the door cards. The dash is in overall good shape, save for a couple of pinholes and notorious distortion around the passenger side SRS airbag. The driver gets an airbag too, and even benefits from a tilt adjustable steering column and extra lumbar adjustment to dial in the perfect driving position. The center stack houses a period-correct Carrozzeria audio upgrade. While it certainly looks the part you, might have to scour the internet for some minidiscs to load up into the audio slot. An automatic climate control unit is intuitively laid out, ripe with Cold A/C and hot heat for wherever you choose to traverse this Surf. For fans of more natural ventilation, all power windows are fully functional, and the rear glass fully unfurls for any four-legged friends in the rear. Power mirrors and power door locks work too and help make daily driving a bit easier for all. Atop the dash lies a neat factory option field monitor, fully functional and ready to display weather conditions for any aspiring meteorologist. The rear bench offers enough space to comfortably seat three additional passengers, and it can also fold fully forward if the driver decides to use this as a camper or utility vehicle instead. Overall, it's hard to scrutinize this classic interior too much, and the condition is definitely above-average for a 25-year-old vehicle. We've even retained the owner's manual and factory maintenance booklet for originality's sake!
Under the bonnet, the 3RZ-FE is as easy to service as any 4Runner offered to the US market. Parts availability is abundant, and this one has undergone a recent service by our trained technicians to be ready for the road ahead. She turns over swiftly, care of a new 12v battery, and idling is smooth and confident. This 25 year old mill has been fully protected against any unwanted leaks, while a replacement of the valve cover gasket and a new oil pump ensures you won't lose a drop of lubrication as you putt down the road. Of course a fresh oil and filter service was performed and this one runs right as rain! Acceleration out of this little gas four banger is quite surprising, and with a manual gearbox handy you can really maximize this Surf's powerband on or off the pavement! Shifts are smooth, with no grinds or pop outs to be found, and a standard selective transfer case allows you to cycle between 2 and 4 wheel drive with ease. 4 Low is also on hand should you become mired in the muck. The suspension is soft and plenty compliant over road imperfections large and small, and the brakes aren't too shabby for this prominent rig, either. Lastly, we've mounted and balanced new Falken rubber at all four corners. sure to deliver plenty of grip in sand, snow, or wherever you may go!
