1996 Land Cruiser Prado RX
Available for: $17,495
The J90 is a modern take on the short-wheelbase Land Cruiser of yore, and the top-tier execution of the design leaves little to be desired. This 1996 is a special little truck, finished in a Stellar Blue over Gray Metallic (K13) two-tone. Complimented by a brutish OEM brushgaurd with integrated oversized Bosch fog lamps, WEDS Keeler alloys, and a subtle set of OEM rainguards, this RX is quite the looker. Aside from some light dings, chips, scuffs, and some fading clearcoat on the roof, the paint is in good shape overall. The unique styling is underpinned by a sturdy body on frame platform, and this recently serviced rig is offered with a mere 139k verified and documented miles. For the Toyota diesel enthusiast, this legendary 3.0L is barely broken in, and is known for providing incredible performance and above-average fuel efficiency. Capable, durable, and highly collectible it's easy to see why this stickshift JDM SUV is a certified Japanese Classic!
The interior is filled with premium materials, electric amenities, and even a few upgrades. The driver sits far above traffic and feels commanding over the road while promoting decent outward visibility. The dashboard is in good shape overall and lacks any cracking or weather-related distortion. Atop its a green backlit Field Monitor to display the exterior conditions to those within the comfortable confines of the cabin. Dual front SRS airbags add some peace of mind to anyone riding up front, and the digital automatic climate controls are located in the center stack. It should be noted that the heat is blazing hot for the winter ahead, and for next year, the A/C blows cold. Above, a Pioneer radio upgrade breaks up the cabin with some color and supplements the turbodiesel soundtrack nicely. Power windows, locks, and power-folding mirrors make daily use more enjoyable for the driver, and to find the optimal driving position an adjustable steering column is standard. The highlight of the interior has to be the blue and gray textured cloth on the seats and door cards. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears and ooze 90's appeal. The headliner and carpets have also withstood the past 25 years without sustaining major abuse. That's not to say the cabin is perfect as some of the interior plastics have some light blemishes and the rear cupholder cover is broken, but frankly, that's a bit of nitpicking. This thing was obviously cared for in a prior life and it shows! It even has the OEM carpeted mats still on hand to protect against future spills and stains.
We feel that the J90 Prado is the most modern feeling SUV we are currently offering for good reason. Sharing many parts with the USDM 4Runner, this five-seater is powered by an intercooled version of the legendary 1KZ-TE. It makes more power and runs lower EGTs than the 1KZ that preceded it. Thanks to two new 12v batteries installed here stateside, the four-banger churns to life with the twist of the key. Thanks to a new engine air filter and fuel filter she idles with confidence, and the 3.0L is fresh off an oil and filter service. The best option from the factory would have to be the five-speed manual gearbox, which is seldom spec'd from the factory. While almost all of these are found with slushboxes, this example is a blast to drive and you can't help rowing up and down the gears. Shifts are rewarding and the driver has much more control over the platform. Torque is fed through a full-time 4WD system and if you plan to take this truck offroad, there is even more good stuff in store. A standard center locking differential and low-range 4WD will have your back to get through the worst terrain. If highway cruising is your thing, the Prado can cruise sustainably at freeway speeds and is peppy about town. The ABS brakes are capable and the power steering is light, yet on point. To complete the slate of reconditioning items, we mounted and balanced four new 31" all-terrain tires at all four corners. They not only look mean, but most importantly, they will last for tens of thousands of miles to come and deliver all the year-round grip you need!
