Japan was sticking it to the competition in just about every market segment in the late 90's. Giving the Germans a run for their money, the redesigned X100 chassis excelled in comfort, reliability, and overall ease of ownership. Not to mention, this top-trim Tourer V was darn quick too! Our 1996 Chaser is a great example of an unmolested JZX100 and is finished in some classy Ebony Teal Pearl (6N9) paint. Set off by OEM rainguards, and an optional 3 piece lip kit, this Chaser is an ideal blank canvas, and the 104k verified and documented miles on the clock are a clear indicator this saloon was well cared for in a prior life. Easy to own, modify, and easier to fall in love with, these JZX's make for great daily drivers or weekend backroad rippers. Backed by a silky smooth Toyota turbocharged inline-6, why wouldn't we call this 90's icon a Japanese Classic?
The interior is tidy, well appointed, and is chock full of enough safety features and power amenities to make daily use a breeze. Toyota pulled out all the stops on quality, and these JZX100's were bolstered with front and side SRS airbags to keep you and your copilot happy. The dash lacks any cracking or fading, although we did want to note some moderate peeling around the defrost vents, typical of these Chasers. Still, the faux carbon trim in the center stack is in above average shape and houses an easy to use digital automatic climate control system. Cold A/C is ripe and ready for the upcoming warmer months, and adjacent OEM audio works fine for its vintage. Power windows, remote locks, and power mirrors work like a charm, with the option to electronically fold the mirror housing for tight city parking. The headliner is tight and tidy and the carpets beneath have resisted any major staining over the years. Also in good shape, the factory patterned cloth upholstery adds an air of individuality and extends throughout the cabin without a rip or tear. Overall, this cabin is in above average condition for being over 27 years young. It has all the appointments needed for a great daily driver, and we retained the factory owner's manual for good measure!
The 1JZ-GTE under the bonnet is a fan favorite, and for good reason. Ours is fresh off an oil and filter service and cranks over with haste care of a new 12v battery we installed here at the shop. We addressed a leaky rear main seal to save you the headache of an immediate service, and dropped in a new fuel pump and filter to rid this 2.5T of any pesky contaminants. With the maintenance performed, this JZX zips up to highway speeds without a hitch, and the 5 speed manual gearbox allows peak command over the GTE's powerband. For the purists, we did want to note this car was originally optioned with an automatic gearbox but our records indicate a new R154 was recently installed before it departed the motherland. Power is hammered to the rear wheels on this sport saloon and we installed new lower spindle bushings at the left rear. Easy to dart through backroad twists and turns, the steering is easy to maneuver and the ABS brakes can clamp down hard when called upon. To ensure optimal power transfer and traction, we wrapped the alloys in fresh Falken rubber. Chock full of tread, they'll keep you covered for tens of thousands of miles to come!
