1996 Intercooled Hilux Surf

For those who need an SUV with a sense of purpose, look no further than this 1996 intercooled Toyota Surf. Optioned with the most desirable engine and a tasty center-locked 4WD system, this Toyota can traverse nearly any terrain. It also is an SSR-G model, which means a feature-filled cabin, and to top it all off, everything is handsomely styled. Set off by OEM rainguards, five refinished factory alloy wheels, a factory rear spoiler, and subtle rear privacy tint, this truck has some serious pavement presence. Aside from some light dings, chips, and small touchup spots, the Desert Dune (1A5) paint is in good shape and the stylish scooped hood perfectly frames this rig's best feature, the 1KZ!  Fresh off a recent service, this turn-key Toyota is offered with a mere 129k verified and documented miles on the clock. Durable, efficient, and powerful, this Hilux would be a killer daily driver, useful trail rig, or fun year-round family hauler. Japanese Classics like this don't come along too often and the Toyota enthusiasts will surely appreciate this example for so many reasons.

The cabin features decent ergonomics, some handy safety features, and a number of power amenities. It even has a few upgrades like the touchscreen Kenwood headunit with Bluetooth integration. It comes loaded with some Japanese tunes for you to rock out to on your first road trip, as well. Both front passengers benefit from dual SRS airbags which should add some peace of mind, and the dashboard lacks any major imperfections such as cracking or distortion. The driver can find the optimal driving position behind the wheel thanks to a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. The gauges are easy to read and well-illuminated, however, we did want to note the tachometer is inoperable. The seats are upholstered in a desirable Moon Mist cloth. The durable cloth is in above average shape and they lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The middle row has the ability to tumble forward to create a flat loading floor to maximize cargo room. They also split fold, as well. Functional power-folding mirrors, door locks, and electric windows make daily use more enjoyable. The automatic climate control system is simple to operate and can dial in cool A/C or scorching heat upon demand. For those who prefer natural ventilation, the rear glass can power down into the tailgate. There is also a power under mirror that can drop down from the rear spoiler to provide a view of parking obstacles that may be hard to see when reversing. The headliners and door cards are in fine shape as are the carpets, and as a whole, the interior is impressive!

Sharing a platform with the US 4Runner pays dividends, and this Surf is simple and inexpensive to service. The 1KZ-TE engine has a reputation for its bulletproof nature, and this one is fresh off an oil and filter service. Two new 12v batteries allow the four -banger to quickly churn over and new serpentine belts keep the electronics powered and engine bay squeaks to a minimum. A new fuel filter keeps contaminants out of the 3.0L and the torquey mill feels strong as an ox. It sounds incredible too, thanks to the Fujitsubo back box. It's connected to a stout automatic gearbox that makes good use of the engine's prodigious low-end grunt. For the best acceleration and fuel economy 2WD would be the go-to setting, but when the weather doesn't comply, those behind the wheel have some great options to keep the Surf adhered to the road. A low-range and high-range 4WD system can be engaged on the fly, and when you need that last bit of grip, a center locker can be utilized. That trick transfercase benefits from a new front output seal and a fluid exchange was performed by one of our trained techs. With the driveline shored up, we focused our attention on the braking system. New pads and rotors were installed up front and the left brake caliper, which was showing signs of sticking, was replaced. ABS is standard for those living in snowy regions and the brakes feel utterly confident when called upon. The factory 16"s are wrapped in grippy 31" all-terrain Falkens at all four corners. The new rubber will last for tens of thousands of miles to come and quiets down the road noise a tad, too! Turn key and ready to roll off the lot, this well spec'd Surf is a special truck!
