1996 Honda RD1 CR-V
The Honda CR-V has a bit of a cultish following and it's easy to understand why. These determined little runabouts are loved for their reliability, all-weather usability, and practicality. They are also a tad on the quirky side, featuring a standard picnic table and an array of fun accessories like nerf bars and chrome spoilers. Admittedly our 1996 Adriatic Blue (B-74P) example is a bit more straightlaced. Aside from some privacy tint, the exterior is just as it left the factory with no modifications and the body is in good shape aside from some minor blemishes including a couple of dings and scuffs. Offered with a mere 45k verified and documented miles, this AWD crossover is fresh off a recent service. The RD1 provides an efficient, durable, and safe option for those who daily drive and need something they can rely upon. It's easy to see why the stylish JDM Honda has a massive following and is certainly a Japanese Classic and the next owner will surely enjoy it thoroughly.
The cabin is spacious and simple. The view of the road ahead is clear and commanding as this CUV rides above traditional sedans on the motorway. Unlike some CR-Vs, this is equipped with the optional dual SRS airbags located atop the dash. No cracks or distortion are noted on the aforementioned dashboard, and a Kenwood radio and automatic climate control system are right at hand. Both work like a charm and the A/C blows cold currently. We have recharged the system and did want to note the possibility of a small leak. All the same, power windows, locks, and mirrors make daily use convenient, but we did want to note that the power-folding system is no longer operational. Not to nitpick, but we also wanted to disclose the passenger side window is a little slower than the others but it gets the job done. A collapsible center tray includes cup holders for all, and the gray cloth seats are in good condition overall. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears and the door cards match to boot. The upholstery is soft, durable, and comfortable on long journeys behind the wheel. The carpets and headliner haven't sustained any major abuse over the years and the cargo area is surprisingly spacious. The seats have plenty of adjustability and can even be folded into a pseudo sleeping arrangement if you need to catch a nap. Even the owner's manual is still sitting in the glove box and it's obvious to see this ride was cared for in a prior life in Japan.
The convenient thing about CR-V ownership is that the platform was sold here stateside. Parts and services are readily available and are known to be affordable. The B20B four-cylinder that powers this hauler is fresh off an oil and filter service. It starts up immediately thanks to a new 12v battery installed here in our shop. A new air filter helps the 2.0L to breathe cleanly and the engine is mated to an automatic gearbox. The transmission shifts properly and sends power to all four wheels. The suspension rides well thanks to new struts installed at all four corners. The power steering and brakes feel just the same as all the other Hondas we retail and the lightweight and fun nature of this platform is killer for city dwellers. It does just well on the highway and the ride has been quieted down thanks to a set of new Falklen tires at all four corners. They will last for tens of thousands of miles to come and deliver premium year-round grip in all weather conditions.
