1996 Hilux Surf SSR-X
The N185 chassis is incredibly well-rounded. The trusty 4x4 system and determined turbo diesel are ideal for those needing year-round transport, but why hide it, this one's gearbox makes this an enthusiast's dream rig! This 1996 SSR-X is finished in a Stellar Blue over Metallic Gray two-tone (8L7), and is set off by an OEM brushguard, privacy tint, optional rear tire cover, 16" gunmetal alloys, and factory rainguards. The paint and body are in good nick aside from some light scuffs, chips, and dings associated with normal use. Recently serviced, this turn-key five-seater is offered with only 79k verified and documented miles. These lovable third-generation models are the perfect blend of size, efficiency, and performance, and this highly collectible example represents the pinnacle of the entire Hilux Surf model line!
The interior is spacious, nicely optioned, and was cared for in a prior life. The dash is in good shape, lacking any cracking or fading, and the view of the road ahead is unencumbered. Unlike the N130 that preceded it, this model came with standard dual front SRS airbags for some added peace of mind when behind the wheel. The switchgear is all close by, and the driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering wheel and adjustable lumbar support. The OEM audio offers decent clarity and the automatic digital climate control above works like a charm. The cold A/C is great to have on hand for these remaining dog days of summer, and if you prefer more natural ventilation, the power windows and electric rear glass roll down when called upon. Additional electric features that function include power side mirrors, locks, and radio antenna. The headliner does have some light scuffs, but the carpets have been well cared for as are the door cards. The blue corduroy-style cloth upholstery is in above-average shape and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The middle row can split-fold and be tucked away to create a flat loading floor. Even the OEM carpet mats, service manuals, and maintenance booklets are included in the sale, located in the glove box. Overall, it's easy to see this special Surf was loved by its prior owner in Japan.
The driveline is a real gem as they say, and the torquey 1KZ-TE four-banger provides all the twist necessary to propel this Toyota. It starts up promptly with the turn of the key, thanks to two new 12v batteries installed here stateside. The 3.0L idles with confidence, and is fresh off an oil and filter service. Mated to the five-speed, the truck is more involved and lively to drive about. The gearbox lacks any grinding and is suited for city and highway use. Power can be sent to the rear wheels alone, and if the going gets tough, there are both 4WD high and low settings on standby. If you plan to take a beach trip the factory center locker can be engaged to get you through trickier terrain. To give the driveline a bit of a rehab, we replaced the front axles with new ones, and now this Surf is good to go. The power steering is light, yet on point, and the brakes feel confident when called upon. Lastly, we replaced all four of the tires with 31" Falkens. These will last for tens of thousands of miles to come and deliver all the year-round grip you will need. We even replaced the spare too.
