Toyota trucks and SUVs are a cut above. They always have been, and this 1996 Hilux SSR-G is a fine example of a well-built, safe, robust, and reliable vehicle from Toyota's golden era. Finished in Toyota's sporty Stellar Blue over Gray (8L7) two-tone, the paint is in good nick aside from some light scuffs and dings associated with normal use. The lower section of the two tone has been refinished in a darker gray hue, and sets off this SUV's muscular lines, alongside the OEM rainguards and rear spoiler. Packing a punchy turbo diesel and center locking differential, this rig is not just a safe family hauler, it's an off-road beast! Fresh off a recent service, this 120k verified and documented example is turn-key and ready to rock. For those who value performance, durability, and practicality, this special SSR-G Surf is a top-tier Japanese Classic.

As a top-of-the-range model, this wonderful truck includes nearly all of the desired convenience items offered by the factory. The power-folding mirrors and electric sunroof come to mind, and both work as advertised. Some models like this one received a Field Monitor. It displays barometric pressure, temperature and direction of travel on a small screen located by the map lights. The dash lacks any cracking or major UV damage and houses standard dual SRS airbags. Centrally located automatic climate control has working A/C and heat with large, easy to depress buttons. One of our trained techs installed a new A/C compressor which can be put to use immediately, for those living in warmer climates like Florida and California. The OEM audio was upgraded to a Pioneer Roku-Navi head unit. It's easy to use and delivers decent quality audio and a more modern aesthetic. The gray seats are in good shape and lack and major damage such as holes, or tears. The gray cloth is also pretty durable, as well. The driver's seat even has adjustable lumbar support for long drives. Unlike our US 4Runners, the rear seats have several recline settings so rear passengers can take a quick snooze or get a bit more comfortable over long trips. Electric windows and locks make daily use enjoyable and a power rear mirror can be unfurled from the rear optional spoiler so that you can see the rear bumper when parking. The carpets and door cards are in average shape and the headliner has withstood major abuse over the years. The previous owner in Japan cared for this Hilux, undoubtedly, and they even included the original owner's manuals for the next owner!

The drivetrain is fantastic and Americans sadly never got to enjoy this 1KZ-TE, until just recently. It's a shame because this 3.0L diesel four-banger is an absolute gem. Fresh off an oil and filter service the engine starts up with a twist of the key. Two new 12v batteries aid ignition and the serpentine belts were replaced with new ones while this truck was in our service department. The turbodiesel sounds great, and you can actually hear the charged air and turbo from inside the cabin. It's intoxicating frankly, and it's hard to stay off the boost because of it! The 1KZ is linked to a slick-shifting auto gearbox. It is responsive around town and geared well for interstate use. The best part of buying the JDM version of the Hilux is the center locking differential. It makes quick work of beach sand and is ideal for those living off the beaten path. If the driver wants to utilize 2WD or 4WD, a cabin-mounted switch disengages and engages the system. The suspension is superb on tarmac too, and has a good amount of ground clearance to boot. The brakes are on point, and we have installed brand new front brake pads and rotors for good measure. New steering rack bushings keep the Hilux tracking straight, and new Falken all-terrain tires have been mounted at all four corners. The new rubber will last for tens of thousands of miles to come and deliver all the year-round grip you need. We even replaced the spare, too!
