The Hilux Surf is one of the best on-road SUVs and is more than capable off-road as well. This 1996 looks striking, finished in a sexy Light Blue Pearl Metallic over Silver, and boasts a mere 111k documented and verified miles. The drivetrain packs a wallop thanks to a recently serviced punchy 3.4L gasoline V6 which was conveniently offered stateside in our 4Runner's. Highly optioned this SSR-G includes a Recaro interior, a spacious cabin, and plenty of power features. For those who wish to drive a unique hauler, this efficient, safe, easy to service, and reliable rig would surely fit the bill.

The cabin is special and this one has the rare and desirable Recaro seating option. It steals the show, and from the material color contrast to the bespoke headrests, it's marvelous. Other than a minor tear on the driver's side seat bottom, there are no other major rips or stains to note. The bolstering is aggressive upfront and keeps driver and passenger from sloshing about. The dash is in good shape and lacks any cracking or distortion. Dual SRS airbags are standard and are a massive safety upgrade over the prior generation. The driver also receives power-folding mirrors and controls for the electric locks and windows. These work as they should and the rear glass also powers down for better ventilation. A tilt column is also standard and the view of the road ahead is clear and commanding, as this tall truck rides above traffic. The altimeter/compass no longer works, however, the power sunroof does. An upgraded Pioneer headunit replaces the OEM one, and works currently although we prefer the sound of the V6. It tilts and fully retracts if you would like some additional fresh air. If it's too hot for that, the automatic climate control blows cold and will make these remaining summer months more tolerable. The headliner and door cards look good but the driver-side front carpets do have some heavy wear to note. The cargo area is largely undamaged from the past 25 years of use. Our favorite cabin feature is the retractable rear mirror that aids with parking. With the press of a button, it deploys out of the rear spoiler and allows the driver can see any objects behind them, saving on a pricey insurance claim.

The mechanicals on this SUV are shared with the US 4Runner. This makes ownership seamless and these 3.4L V6s have a legendary reputation. The 5VZ-FE is fresh off an oil and filter service and starts up promptly thanks to a new 12v battery. The engine idles confidently and is connected to a selective transfer case. The driver can choose between 2WD and 4WD and unlike our US models, this one comes with a center locking differential. The automatic gearbox shifts as it should and is geared well for sustained highway use. The TEMS adjustable suspension can handle the rigors of daily use, and this midsize body on frame truck is confident overlanding. It has been refreshed with a new front left wheel bearing and a new outer tie rod, and an alignment of course. The OEM split-spoke alloys are all wrapped in new all-terrain tires as is the tailgate-mounted spare. These will last for tens of thousands of miles to come and deliver premium year-round grip.
