Toyota's 3rd generation Hilux Surf received an exterior redesign, a more refined interior, and a host of upgrades over its predecessor. This 1996 Toyota Hilux Surf SSR-G is offered by a measly 115K verified and documented miles on the chassis, and the body is in great shape with a few scuffs and rock chips to report. Finished in a beautiful Desert Dune Metallic (1A5), the smooth bodylines are accented by an OEM rear spoiler, factory raingurads, and some subtle privacy tint. Fresh off a recent service, this turn-key Hilux Surf is rugged, inexpensive to own and maintain, and fun to drive for a family SUV. For those who want an all-weather year-round truck with loads of equipment and safety features, look no further than this Japanese Classic!

The interior is spacious, comfortable, and well-appointed. The view of the road ahead is clean and unobstructed. The dash is in good nick and for the first time ever, dual front SRS airbags were added for a bit of extra reassurance when behind the wheel. The dash lacks any cracking or distortion, although we did want to note there is some slight misalignment of the glovebox. The field monitor system is located directly above to give you an accurate reading of exterior temperature and direction of travel. The power sunroof allows for additional ventilation and works like a champ. It retracts and tilts, plus lets plenty of natural light in the cabin when closed. The center armrest does have a small tear in the fabric that we wanted to note, but the door cards, carpets, and headliner have withstood any major abuse over the years. The seats are trimmed in a light grey cloth that is soft to the touch and lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The rear seats collapse 60/40 split and reward you with more storage space in the cargo area for your camping gear, and the driver's side has adjustable lumbar support. Electric windows, power-folding mirrors, and locks are operating as expected and make daily use enjoyable. The rear window powers down too if you have a canine friend, and an electric backup mirror can be deployed when you put this rig in reverse.

Since the 5VZ-FE V6 engine is the top powerplant option in 4runners here stateside, therefore parts are inexpensive and readily available here in the US. Fresh off an oil and filter service the 3.4l V6 starts up promptly thanks to a new 12v battery and some new spark plugs installed by one of our trained technicians. It idles with confidence and benefits from a slate of recent service items. New valve cover gaskets ensure the engine stays topped up on lubricant and a set of new serpentine belts keep the accessories running as they should. The powerplant is connected to a slick-shifting automatic gearbox. It sends power to two or four wheels depending on the driver's preference. For bad weather conditions or use on the sand, a center locking differential can be engaged as can low range gearing, too. The TEMS adjustable factory suspension is predictable and can handle the rigors of daily use without breaking a sweat. The brakes do a wonderful job of slowing this midsize SUV down to manageable speeds and the pads and rotors are all new up front. The resurfaced factory alloys are painted black, which contrast well against the Desert Dune colorway. They all come with new Falken all-terrain tires mounted at all four corners. We even replaced the spare tire to match!
