Durable, determined, and fun to drive overall, this could be your next Japanese Classic project!

Exterior Overview

***This Hilux Surf is a running and driving unit, however the vehicle overheats and we would recommend a full overhaul of the cooling system. It is being sold AS-IS as a mechanic’s special. You must bring a trailer to pick up this Toyota or have it shipped.

The 3rd generation Hilux Surf is a truck that can withstand loads of abuse, with its robust body on frame construction, unstoppable turbodiesel engine, and surefooted 4WD drivetrain. That’s not to say these trucks are perfect turn-key examples right off the bat, as a decent amount of reconditioning is necessary to get these 25 year old rigs in tip-top shape. Our 1996 SSR-G is a great looking truck in need of a bit of TLC to be road ready, and it could be an appealing buy for any shadetree mechanic or aspiring overlander. Finished in Desert Dune Metallic (1A5) the cosmetics show well overall, and the aesthetic is set off by a factory graphics package, an optional rear spoiler, swing-out tire carrier, and some imposing 20″ alloys. We wanted to note some bodywork in the roof and pillars and a decent crack in the windscreen, but based off the repairs this rig is no worse for the wear overall. Some light paint imperfections and clearcoat fade are also present, as typical of most 25 year old vehicles. Still, the truck stands out amongst its 4Runner cousins and the 119k miles on the clock are verified and documented. Durable, determined, and fun to drive overall, this could be your next Japanese Classic project!

Interior Overview

The interior is nicely designed, quite accommodating, and safe. Toyota engineers bolstered the ’96 with dual SRS airbags up front, additional crash support in the doors, and beefier, more premium materials throughout. The seats are finished in a durable Moon Mist cloth. Aside from some separation on the driver’s bolster and steering wheel, the materials are in fine shape throughout and the dash shows defects apart from some minor lifting from prolonged sun exposure. The center stack is also easy to navigate, framing an automatic climate control system that pumps out cold A/C and hot heat into the cabin upon request. Adjacent to the HVAC, Pioneer audio works well and pumps tunes into the cabin. This SSR-G features an optional field monitor to monitor outside conditions and a full slate of power equipment, including windows, locks, and side mirrors. There’s even a nifty convex mirror that drops down from the rear wing to aid tighter parking jobs. The rear bench is also versatile, reclining slightly if you need to catch a snooze in the back, and folding flat to maximize the available cargo space in the rear. For lugging around oversized goods or a couple of pets, the rear glass also slides down with the push of a button. Overall, there’s not much this cabin does poorly, and the condition is better than your average USDM example.

Mechanical Overview

The 1KZ-TE under the bonnet is a beast both on and off tarmac. These tenacious turbodiesels were designed to take a beating, although we would recommend installing a new head and completely refreshing the cooling system to prolong the life of the 3.o. We did take care of some service items, including 2 new 12v batteries to properly aid ignition. We also changed out the alternator and serpentine belts to keep your accessories running smoothly. Lastly, the engine air filter and fuel filter were replaced as a bit of a tune up. A compression and leakdown test were performed to verify the condition of the 1K’s internals, and we’d recommend installing a new radiator and thermostat before taking the truck on its maiden voyage. The automatic gearbox is in good shape and a selective transfercase operates as you’d expect, with an optional center locker on standby if you need to journey off the beaten path. The suspension is soft and compliant, and both rear upper and lower control arm bushings are showing signs of wear. The steering could also use some attention. The pump is leaking slightly and we’d recommend new rack bushings and inner and outer tie rods up front to shore up the drivetrain. Lastly, the front left wheel bearing shows some play. The multipiece alloys are wrapped in good all season rubber, and have plenty of life left in them. Ideal as a overland project or budget conscious daily commuter, this lovely diesel has plenty of life left to give once she’s buttoned up!
