Despite its truck-based design, the cabin includes plenty of space and amenities to be comfortably driven during day to day use. A Pioneer radio upgrade handles all the tunes and makes for a fine compliment to the turbo diesel soundtrack. Air conditioning, power windows, door locks, and power mirrors all work like a charm, and make commuting around much more pleasant. The driver also benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. The view of the road ahead is clear and commanding and this tall truck allows the pilot to see far above traffic. A Shevron dash mat does obscure some of the common cracking that affects these dashboards, but fits nicely. The seats are upholstered in a seldom-seen blue and gray textured cloth and are in above average shape. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears and are comfortable on long hauls. The rear seats are split-folding and can be converted into a flat loading floor for additional cargo needs or an impromptu road trip nap. The rear window even powers down if you need to fit a couple of 2x4s out the back from a run to the Home Depot. The split clamshell design also pays dividends while tailgating! The carpets and door cards are in fine shape as well, and the headliner is clean and affixed tautly to the roof. Even the factory owners manuals are on hand for the new American owner, and it's clear this truck was cared for in a prior life. 

While it's easy to fall in love with the nicely appointed cabin and stellar looks, the beauty of this rig runs more than skin deep. Under the bonnet sits a 1KZ-TE engine that has a reputation for being nearly bulletproof. The 3.0L is fresh off an oil and filter service and starts up promptly with the twist of the key, care of two new 12v batteries. A new fuel filter keeps the diesel properly strained and the four-banger idles and revs with confidence. Linked to a selective transfercase that allows the driver to select between 4WD high and low, and 2WD for fuel economy, the automatic gearbox shifts properly and makes good use of the 1Ks broad torque curve. A new front right axle ensures a seamless drive.  Acceleration is impressive for an SUV and the fuel economy is better than the more common gasoline V6. The suspension provides loads of ground clearance and is predictable over road imperfections. One of our trained techs has replaced the front sway bar links, pitman arm, and idler arm to give the steering a refresh, and this Surf goes right where you point it. The brakes are confident and the refinished N185 alloys are mounted and balanced in 31-inch Falken all-terrain rubber, sure to deliver plenty of grip on whatever road surface you prefer to travel on.
