The AE111 Corolla coupe is a rare and unique Japanese export but also represents sneaky good performance at a bargain. Redesigned for the 1995 model year, this hot-shot Levin model features a punchy twenty-valve engine, a manual gearbox, and a few visual and performance upgrades. Finished in a stately Black Metallic (205), and offered with a meager 71K verified miles, the body is in good shape other than a few minor dings and scuffs associated with normal use. Legally imported, and recently service, this FWD two-door would make a fun daily driver, weekend cruiser, or responsible canyon carver that could be enjoyed year-round!

This Toyota was obviously well cared for by its owners in Japan as evidenced by the interior. The simple, spartan, cockpit includes a bevy of functional power equipment and has room for four. Starting with the driver, a manual seat and telescoping column allow for a comfortable driving position. The dash is in good shape, lacking any cracks or distortion. All the switchgear is readily at hand and the gauges are easy to read, while the controls are simple to use. The automatic climate system features cold A/C and heat for use in winter and summer. If you prefer more natural ventilation, the OEM rain guards reduce in-cabin noise when the windows are down. Standard power equipment includes functional power-folding mirrors, power locks, and a one-touch driver's window. The OEM head unit has been ditched for a superior one produced by Pioneer. The sound quality is crisp and the deck includes USB and auxiliary inputs. The upholstery is in really good shape lacking any major rips, stains, or tears. The Gray cloth is still soft to the touch, and the material is dotted with some blue and gray accents to break up the interior color pallet. The same material is used for the door cards as well as the headliner, which are clean and tightly upholstered to their surfaces. Other important interior features include folding rear seats and rear cupholders in case the rear occupants need a spot to store their beverage of choice. The OEM carpet mats have done a wonderful job protecting the carpets and are included in the sale of this Toyota.

The engine is an absolute gem and is special thanks to its twenty valves, individual throttle bodies, revvy nature, and signature sound. The 20V 4A-GE blacktop benefits from a fresh oil and filter service and doesn't require a service for another three-thousand mile. Startup is brisk and the HKS Super Dragger exhaust note is fantastic. You can't help but rev this thing, and acceleration is pretty impressive. It pulls all the way to 8K, and up top, the engine is as good as any Honda. The gearbox feels connected feeding the power efficiently to the front wheels. Its geared for US highway speeds and this Levin would be a good candidate for a commuter as its fairly efficient as it relates to fuel economy. The suspension feels planted and barring some noise from the front struts due to age, there is little to complain about. The steering is power-assisted, smooth, and communicative while the brakes are grabby and direct. Gold Rally Sparco wheels complete the package, and at 15 inches, replacement tires are inexpensive, while keeping the ride quality from being too firm.

Without breaking the bank, the Levin is a FWD sports car thats just as good as any Honda out there. It combines Toyota's reliability with impressive driving dynamics, all at a low cost of ownership. This unique platform gets plenty of looks without appearing flashy, but without a doubt, the best part of the AE111 is how it drives when you're behind the wheel!
