Toyota's Hilux Surf has a worldwide reputation for being unstoppable. It's not like the formula used was that brilliant or revolutionary; as Toyota paired a rugged 4WD system to a bulletproof turbodiesel, in an SUV body that was neither too big or small. This 1995 Surf is equipped with the SSR-X Limited package and is offered with only 85K verified miles. Finished in a classic Toyota Black (204,) the body is in good shape other than light rear bumper corrosion and some small dings, scuffs, and scratches associate with normal use. Featuring neat upgrades such as a 3" suspension lift, OEM rain guards, Epsilon Elite Max alloys, and new oversized tires, this Hilux Surf is the complete package.

The interior of the Surf actually has some decent power options and niceties. The view of the road is unobstructed, and with the upsized tires and lift you can easily see above traffic. The driver benefits from automatic climate control, power windows, locks, and mirrors. For extra ventilation, a powered sunroof can fully retract or vent depending on how much airflow is required. The dash is in good shape and is devoid of any major cracks or discoloration. Conveniently Toyota thought to add retractable cup holders that recess into the dash, and below them is a functional pioneer head unit. A roof-mounted Kenwood soundbar pipes even more sound into the rear passenger area and looks pretty trick. To dress up the cockpit a touch more, aluminum pedals have been installed by the prior owner. Privacy tint has shielded many of the interior plastics and upholstery from direct sunlight and this is evident. The front and rear seats are devoid of any major discoloration, rips, stains or tears. The blue and gray cloth is still soft to the touch and comfortable on long cruises. That's not to say the interior is perfect, as the carpets have light staining and the A/C is a bit noisy, but then again, this truck is a quarter-century old.

The driveline is sturdy and stout, and the 1KZ-TE is prized by enthusiasts. Known for its reliability and fuel efficiency, this 2982cc mill benefits from a fresh semisynthetic oil service, ensuring no scheduled maintenance is required for another five thousand kilometers. With the twist of the key, the large four-banger fires up and sets into a constant idle. The diesel includes an "idle up" switch in the cockpit to increase the baseline idle and add hastens the engine warm-up process. Acceleration is adequate, and down low, the diesel has considerably more grunt than the gasoline three-liter engine. The automatic transmission shifts properly, and the gear ratio can accommodate US interstate speeds. The selective transfer case allows the driver to choose low gearing if the going gets tough, and more grip is required. The brakes and suspension are up to the task of daily driving, and even with the lift, the rig is easy to control. The Epsilon wheels are wrapped with new all-terrain rubber all around, which gives the truck some increased grip on loose surfaces and the look to match.

This mean-looking truck actually is wonderful to daily drive. It offers a package for those who value low cost of ownership, offroading capabilities, and strong resale value. The Hilux a stellar truck, and a sure-fire Japanese Classic.
