Toyota's stellar lineup of Hilux SUVs and trucks are known around the globe for how sturdy and dependable they are. This 1995 SSR-X is highly desirable because it features a manual transmission and gutty turbodiesel engine. Finished in a two-tone Evergreen Peal over Silver (29X,) the body is in good shape other than some minor scuffs and dings associated with normal wear and tear. Accented with a polished factory brush guard, new oversized rubber, and a rear spoiler, this Hilux has an aesthetic that is all business. Offered with a mere 103K verified miles this five-seat hauler has been recently serviced, legally imported, and ready to do some dirty work!

The cabin is both simple and spacious, full of functional power equipment. Standard equipment includes the power windows and locks which work as they should, and the driver also benefits from a tilt steering column. The front passengers get a digital climate control system to regulate the cockpit temperature and a set of cupholders that retract into the center stack when not being used. While most of us take the little things like that for granted, they were a surprisingly rare item to find from the factory back in the day. The A/C does blow cold, and if you prefer more natural ventilation, the rear glass retracts into the tailgate providing a fantastic open-air experience. The Hilux did receive a radio upgrade at some point in its life, and the Carrozarria head unit works as it should. The audio quality isn't half bad, but we still prefer the throaty sound of the 1KZ. The seats are trimmed in a blue textured cloth that is still soft to the touch. The seating accommodations are comfortable on long trips with ample headroom to enjoy. Besides a tear in the driver's right side bolter, there are no major stains, holes, or rips to note. The door cards and headliner are in good shape, although the carpets are lightly stained from routine use. The dash has a custom mat to cover some cracks, and while the power mirrors no longer function, the cabin has been well cared for. Additionally, If you need cargo capacity, the rear bench does fold forward to improve the overall loading capacity and the tailgate drops down for easy access.

The star of the show is Toyota's bulletproof 1KZ-TE four-cylinder. As a massive four-banger, it's not what we'd call the most refined unit, but it makes plenty of power and returns some surprisingly impressive fuel economy. Fresh off an oil and filter service, our technicians have also added two 12V batteries to ensure that you aren't left needing a jump during the first cold snap this winter. With a twist of the key, you're off and running and as an added bonus in this rig, you get to row your own gears. The transmission gives you more control over this platform and makes it more fun to whip around as well. Gear changes are stress-free and the acceleration is impressive compared to the gas engine. The driver can also choose 2WD or 4WD as this green machine comes with a standard selective transfer case. Low gearing is handy in case the going gets tough, and this SUV also benefits from five need all-terrain tires for additional grip. The brakes feel strong and the suspension is happy to handle the daily grind if you're planning to overland this baby, and the long-wheelbase inspires confidence at highway speeds.

Manual models are tough to find, and they aren't exactly making any more of these. Fun to drive, inexpensive to own, and simple to service these Hilux Surfs are certified Japanese Classics.
