Toyota built some world-class haulers in the 1990s, and the HiAce exemplifies this. Packing technology such as sonar backup sensors and soft close door technology, this 1995 offers a buttery smooth ride, massive cargo capacity, and rugged 4WD system that can take you anywhere. Offered with a mere 77K miles, this Silver/Gray (20P) two-tone Super Custom has been well cared for over the years. Aside from some clearcoat fading and a few light dings and scuffs associated with normal use, the body is in good shape. Sporting a host of glass sunroofs and a set of OEM rain guards it was well ahead of its time. Best of all, this rig is powered by one of Toyota's legendary powerplants, the 1KZ-TE, which delivers gobs of torque, decent fuel economy with a low cost of ownership.
The interior is a pleasant surprise compared to the more unassuming exterior. The old owners worked hard to keep the inside clean and the glovebox includes the original owner's manual and plenty of maintenance logs from its life in Japan. The driver and passenger have small step plates so assist upward into the cabin, and the view of the road is unobstructed. The large windscreen and cab-over design is a safety item in itself, and the dashboard ahead is in good shape lacking any cracks or discoloration. A tilt wheel allows for drivers of all sizes to get comfy, and power windows, mirrors, and locks are standard. The gauges are easy to read and all work except for the tach, which is not the biggest issue as this is an auto. The steering wheel is near mint and the OEM audio and climate control function as they should. Separate controls are available for rear climate including a dedicated heating and cooling system. When the weather is milder, we would advise utilizing the massive sunroof suite. The massive front and rear glass roofs ventilate, one powered and one manually. The center roof retracts fully to offer an unencumbered view of the sky above. If you wish to view the starts the seats all fold down to create a space to sleep. The three rows of seats are all trimmed in the same gray cloth with blue and black accents. Besides a few minor holes, they are in wonderful shape and still soft to the touch. The grey headliner and door cards are also in good nick, and the carpets lack any major stains or rips. They are soft to the touch and bolstered properly for long cruises. The tailgate struts work and can raise the door up to six feet of height for easy access to the rear. Side access is assisted by a massive sliding door that pulls itself closed when not enough force is applied. The sonar backup sensors actually work, which is wild considering a car of this vintage would even have them.
Mounted in the center of the platform, this 3.0L turbodiesel sits ready to rock. Bolstered by a newly installed 12V battery, she cranks over quickly and sets into a constant idle. Benefitting from a fresh semi-synthetic oil and filter service, the HiAce needn't be serviced for another three thousand miles. Mated to an automatic transmission, power is sent to all four wheels, and acceleration is surprisingly brisk. The diesel makes plenty of torque and getting up to highway speeds happens quicker than you might think. The long-wheelbase makes high-speed cruising feel stable and large and small potholes are gobbled up by this platform. The brakes are confident and the power steering feels light and easy to articulate. Four brand new Falken all-season tires are mounted and balanced on 15" wheels providing year-round grip.
The HiAce is a versatile van and can be used as a marketing van, kid carrier, or mail delivery vehicle. Its bulletproof drivetrain and a slate of recent maintenance items make this rig attractive to those who know the market on this van, and the interior is chocked full of sweet features to boot.
