The Toyota Aristo is the epitome of what a grand tourer should be. Powerful yet comfortable, technologically advance while being reliable. Derived from the Greek term; Aristo means "best" and while Toyota may have been a little cocky using the term to name their newly designed sports sedan they certainly had justification in doing so. While similar to its U.S. counterpart (the GS300) in many ways, there was one huge difference available for the Japanese models not offered in the United States. That difference was the 2JZ-GTE twin-turbo 3.0L straight 6 engine. This is the same engine Toyota used in the legendary MKIV Supra that needs no introduction. While this particular car has been kept completely stock, that doesn't mean it doesn't have gobs of potential on tap. Finished in the ever classic Polar Silver (199) keeps with the unassuming sedan vibe. The paint itself is in great shape considering its age, with only one real blemish to note. There's a single scratch on the driver's side of the hood that's around 5" but otherwise it's largely blemish-free. There are of course a stone chip or two, but nothing out of the ordinary for having 60K verified miles. It comes as no surprise that the bodywork is in just as good 'a shape with only a minor door ding or two to report.
The executive gray cloth complements its bright silver bodywork well and has been exceptionally maintained. Typically we see some bolster wear on the driver's seat or some wear on the steering wheel over the years but this one is largely free of anything like that. All four seats have been kept stain and tear-free. The same can be said about the carpeting and door panels. These come fitted with all the bells and whistles of the time, and all of which are functioning as expected. Toyota really has set the benchmark for long term quality and reliability. Things like cruise control and power seats were hard to find at this time over there. Other things like power-folding mirrors, door locks, windows, and automatic climate control were mostly standard and leaps ahead of typical US cars of the day.
Naturally, everyone's favorite part of the Aristo is the twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE. Famed for both reliability and its ability to make huge horsepower numbers, there's no wonder why. Mechanically the bulletproof twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE is in excellent condition. It fires to life quickly and frankly, is a bit quietly. While we all picture the million horsepower fire breathing dragon, in stock trim the 2J is an impressively docile drivetrain for day to day life. Boost comes on strong and pulls hard throughout the RPM range. These aren't drag racing monsters, but highway rocketships. Once the power comes on it feels like its never going to stop. Shifts are smooth through the automatic transmission and surprisingly quick. While the Aristo was never offered with a manual option there are plenty of swaps available if you really want. The stock suspension makes the best of any road and really turns this into a car that you could easily chew up the highway in.
