The all-new for 1994 Mistsubish FTO won Car of the Year in Japan upon its domestic debut. The edgy styling, punchy V6, and manual transmission were beloved among enthusiasts, and this 1995 has incredible driving dynamics for a sports car of this era. Offered with a mere 78K verified miles, this Imperial Red (R39C) example is in great shape and the body is straight other than a few minor dings and chips associated with normal use. Freshly serviced, and sporting new rubber all around, this little FWD terror is ready to carve up the tarmac here stateside after a 25-year wait!

The interior quality and layout is a big step up compared to most '90s imports. The flowing interior lines and contours are a direct departure from the more angular aesthetic of older JDM imports. The low lying dash offers an unobstructed view of the road ahead and is in good shape. It neither suffers from distortion or cracking, and matches the color of the headliner, carpets, and door cards. A digital climate system is mounted in the center stack and is remarkably easy to use. The heat and A/C function properly and a set of optional OEM center-mounted gauges monitor battery life and include an analog clock. The previous owner removed the head unit, however, a fix for that is cheap and the MIVEC V6 sounds great anyhow. A tilt wheel and cupholder make commuting much more bearable and the FTO also includes power windows, locks, and mirrors. The aforementioned door cards and headliner are properly upholstered and clean, and the touch surfaces like the gear lever and steering wheel have held up nicely. The most impressive cockpit item is the wonderfully bolstered seats. Above average in condition, the fabric is soft to the touch and the holds you snug while cornering. The blue and red accents almost look like the Recaro Confetti material if you squint hard enough!

The drivetrain feels stout and sturdy, and the torquey V6 bark is fantastic. Fresh off a semi-synthetic oil and filter service, the 1998cc mill starts up immediately with a twist of a key. All stock, other than a Fujitsubo polished exhaust, the MIVEC mill provides plenty of power for passing and merging onto the highway. Mated to a close-ratio five-speed manual transmission, power is sent to the front wheels. The gearbox is direct and doesn't grind or groan. Unlike many cars with nearly 200hp, Mistubishi did a fine job of sorting out much of the torque steer, and FTO goes right where you point it. The power steering is properly weighted and the brakes feel assured. The factory suspension is comfortable enough for daily driving but also provides proper dampening for more spirited drivers. Nighttime driving is aided by a set of projection headlamps and OEM fog lamps mounted low on the bumper. the silver alloys are all wrapped in new all-season rubber ensuring proper safety year-round.
