This stylish statement piece is fun, functional, and looks unlike anything else on the road. For that reason, we think this is one of Toyota's best Land Cruiser designs ever!
Exterior Overview
Everyone wants their Japanese Classic to make them feel special, and we think this 1995 Land Cruiser Prado more than does the trick. It features the old-school styling that enthusiasts go nuts for, but drives and handles similar to a newer vehicle. It also features a full slate of power amenities, and a simple turbodiesel, 4WD drivetrain that’s easy to maintain and fun to wheel. Finished in a rare Dark Blue Mica/Oyster Pearl (27Z) the cosmetics are factory fresh and are accented by a sleek set of OEM rainguards and 16″ WEDS Keeler alloys. Sure, there are a few minor cosmetic blemishes, chips, and dings, but those do little to take away this classic chassis’ overall appeal. The 90k verified and documented miles on the clock are also appealing, and this body on frame beast has only begun its storied life here in the States. This stylish statement piece, this rig is fun, functional, and looks unlike anything else on the road. For that reason, we think this is one of Toyota’s best Land Cruiser designs ever!
Interior Overview
For a chassis that debuted in 1981, you wouldn’t expect the interior to be so modern, but it holds up to 21st-century driving quite well thanks to its full slate of power amenities and top-tier visibility. It’s also in above average shape, with little to nitpick outside of a few hairline dash cracks. The patterned cloth upholstery has resisted the better part of three decades, too, with nary a rip or stain. The same can be said for the headliner and carpets, too, which have been kept tidy underneath OEM carpet mats. Nestled in the center stack, manual climate control works like a charm, and cold A/C can be switched on and off at will. The heat blows hot, too, and an adjacent Panasonic touchscreen head unit features Bluetooth functionality to pump in your own tunes. To maximize storage space, the rear bench can tumble forward, and if you aren’t towing around a full squad, the optional third row can nestle snugly against the D-pillars. Enhancing ease of use in the modern age, all four power windows work as advertised, as do the power locks, electric side mirrors, and an expansive power moonroof. The driver even has an electric lumbar support and a tilt-adjustable steering column. Save for an inoperable oil pressure gauge and some light yellowing on the sunroof plastics, it’s hard to be picky with these classic interiors, and overall, this Prado really delivers.
Mechanical Overview
The exterior looks good, the interior feels solid, but the diesel 4WD underpinnings are made of pure gold! Power is supplied via Toyota’s durable 1KZ-TE, and we’ve given this body on frame beast a thorough once over at the shop. We addressed a leaking valve cover gasket, with a brand new one, and installed new half moon seals so you get the most out of our fresh oil and filter service. We also buttoned up the 1K with all new accessory belts. A new engine air filter and fuel filter keep the 3.0 clean and contaminant free, and we had the ECU professionally rebuilt to ward away any pesky electrical gremlins. For a boxy brute, the long wheelbase feels exceptionally stable, and the turbodiesel accelerates like a champ, delivering torque all the way up to highway speeds. We performed some drivetrain rehab, installing new front and rear output seals on the transfer case. We also performed a front differential fluid service, and the selective 4WD works like a charm now. An automatic gearbox shifts smoothly through all gears and switching in and out of 4WD is a seamless affair. The factory suspension cruises comfortably, and is compliant both on and off loose surfaces. New shocks were installed on all four corners, and we also installed new bushings in the front panhard bar, and on the front swaybar. The power steering is light and easy to maneuver after rebuilding the power steering pump with new seals, and we flushed in new power steering fluid to ensure operation stays smooth. A new steering stabilizer was also mounted up. This rig eats up road imperfections large and small, and the brakes do a swell job as we’ve flushed the system with new fluid. The WEDS wheels are wrapped in brand-new Falken all-terrain rubber. Chock full of tread, they’ll take you anywhere and look great doing it!
