Exterior Overview
*This Land Cruiser has experienced engine failure. The vehicle does not run, and you must bring a trailer to pick up this vehicle or have it shipped.
The 80 series platform is hitting a bit of a renaissance, so to speak. Values are skyrocketing, supply is diminishing, and collectors and common folk alike are flocking to the chassis to get away from the frills and fluff of modern 4x4s. Never sold here in the USA, this 24-valve diesel-powered example is the cream of the crop. Sadly, the engine has seized and will not turn over, but for the right shade tree mechanic or dedicated enthusiast, this project Cruiser could make for a righteous restoration or engine swap candidate. Finished in a one-off Copper Mist Metallic, the exterior on our 1995 VX-L turns heads no matter which way you look at it and is free of any major defects. Sure, there are some minor chips and scratches, and we wanted to note a previous replacement of the hood and windshield in Japan, but those do little to take away from its aesthetic. Set off by a 2″ suspension lift and 33″ Falken all-terrain rubber, this Cruiser is set up to tackle any terrain, and the 159k verified and documented miles on the clock are below average compared to most stateside 80 series models. An untamed beast on or off the pavement, this Japanese Classic is oozing potential!
Interior Overview
The interior on this VX-L is well-optioned and offers a host of amenities and creature comforts to make driving a pleasure for whoever gets behind the wheel. Never seen in our stateside offerings, the cloth upholstery on the seats assumes an almost suede-like finish and was clearly well cared for over the years, as it lacks any major damage, save for some pilling to the driver’s seat base. Additionally, the vinyl dash has fought off any typical age related cracking or distortion, and the factory materials are soft to the touch throughout. Nestled in the lower dash trim, automatic climate control is within arm’s reach, and Eclipse audio is positioned below for anyone who enjoys a soundtrack tailored to their drive. The A/C and heat worked like a charm prior to the engine issue, although we are currently unable to confirm their functionality. For daily use, a full slate of power amenities is a must, and all power windows, locks, and electric mirrors work as advertised. Additionally, a power moonroof can unfurl at the push of a button should you prefer some natural ventilation in the cabin. The driver benefits from a tilt adjustable steering column, and a classy woodgrain steering wheel is a formidable upgrade over the clunky, tired factory unit. The rear cargo area is cavernous, and the middle row can be folded fully forward to maximize cargo capacity if need be. Providing the icing on the cake, a factory field monitor sits snugly beneath the headliner and displays info on outside conditions for any aspiring off-roaders. Overall, this cabin should satisfy all its occupants without fail, save for some light wear to the door panels, and based on its condition, it’s clear this one was cared for in a prior life as well.
Mechanical Overview
Offered up as a non-runner, this Land Cruiser was optioned from the factory with the desirable 1HD-FT powerplant. These 4.2’s run butter smooth, and have sufficient power and torque to propel you on around-town jaunts or longer highway hauls. This updated 24v version saw upgrades to the top end and turbocharger to deliver more power off the line, and the drivetrain is textbook Land Cruiser goodness. It stays true to formula, with full-time 4WD, and a center locking differential and low gearing are on standby if you become entrenched in tricky terrain. The lifted suspension cruises comfortably, and this one sails over harsh road imperfections while feeling well composed overall. Drop in a new engine, swap the drivetrain entirely, or strip it for parts; this unique 80 series will make a statement regardless, and is in solid condition overall!
