1995 HiAce SC 4WD
The Toyota HiAce perfectly balances off-road capability, on-road civility, and die-hard reliability and that's what makes it a Japanese Classic! This 1995 Super Custom model is a lovely little rig, and is finished in a classic Super White over Flaxen Mica (2BH) two-tone. Set off by a refined set of 15" aftermarket alloy wheels, OEM rainguards, dark privacy tint, and some unique overland-themed vinyl, this van is all business. Aside from a few light scratches, scrapes, and dings the body is in good nick, and this eight-seater is fresh off a recent service. Powered by the legendary 1KZ-TE turbodiesel, this 4WD monster is offered with a mere 125k verified and documented miles on the ticker. Great for year-round all-weather transportation, a weekend on the beach, or cruising around running a few errands, it's easy to see why these Toyotas are beloved. Tough, stylish, and surprisingly fun to drive the HiAce might be the best van out of Japan!
The cabin is massive, nicely optioned, and designed with premium materials all around. The triple sunroof suite steals the show. For a light breeze, the rear sunroof tilts up, and the middle powers back all the way for a view of the heavens above. Even the front can be tilted up manually and the side windows popped out for the best open-air experience possible. The driver has a commanding view of the road ahead and the cab forward layout offers incredible outward visibility and a tidy turn radius. The pilot benefits from an SRS airbag mounted atop the steering wheel for some added peace of mind and the dash lacks any cracking or distortion. A tilt-adjustable steering column allows whoever is behind the wheel to find the ideal driving position and power windows, power-folding side mirrors, and power locks all work like a charm, making daily use more enjoyable. Even the factory soft close side door is electric, and it pulls closed when left ajar to prevent your battery from being left flat! A touchscreen Eclipse head unit modernizes the center stack, and quickly drowns out the kids and spouse when they become unbearable. The controls for the dual-zone digital air conditioning and heater are right above. Heating and cooling can be dialed in with dedicated rear controls and the A/C is frigid in this example. The tan-colored upholstery is in good shape overall and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The rear and middle row can slide fore and aft and the middle can also swivel around 180 degrees to face the rear. The carpets, headliner, and door cards have withstood the past 25 years without sustaining major abuse and even the owner's manual and maintenance booklets are included in the sale of the vehicle.
The drivetrain layout is so much different and better than the way modern vans are set up. The 1KZ-TE is mounted low in the chassis and mid-mounted for the best handling and braking experience. Speaking of which, new front upper ball joints were replaced by one of our trained techs while it was in the air. The HiAce glides over large and small potholes alike and is predictable feeling overall. A new set of 28" Toyo Open Country All-Terrains were mounted and balanced while it was up on the lift, and the HiAce was then aligned so it drives straight as an arrow. Acceleration is impressive for a vehicle of this age and size and the broad torque curve of the 1K pays dividends on loose surfaces and from stoplight to stoplight. We rehabbed the four-banger with a fresh valve cover gasket and then performed an oil and filter service. A new 12v battery was also installed so that it cranks to life immediately and a new fuel filter strains out unwanted contaminants from the engine. The automatic transmission shifts as it should and the brakes are solid and quick to reel this thing in from higher speeds. Comfy, trustworthy, and capable this HiAce looks great, but drives even better!
