While the first generation of the Lexus SC is a familiar face here in the US, per usual we were only offered the watered-down version. Back home in Japan Toyota was busy stuffing turbocharged monster motors in to just about everything with four wheels; this '94 Soarer being no exception. The JZZ30 is the ultimate blend of both luxury and performance. Back in 1994 the JZZ30 debuted in Japan as one of the more extravagant Grand Tourers of its time. With it's sleek and sophisticated styling it has proven to be an iconic design for years to come. And with the rising prices of the Toyota Supra, the Toyota Soarer is a budget-friendly alternative since it utilizes the same chassis that the JZA80 did. While they both use the same recipe they did use a few different ingredients. Fitted with the savage 1JZ-GTE the Soarer has a completely different sound than anything else on the road. Pair that with the bulletproof R154 5 speed and you've got a great thing on your hands. While it initially left the factory Midnight Indigo Pearl (8J5) it underwent a full-color change over to a classic Tuxedo Black. The color change was rather well done, the only place you'd notice is the shade change in the engine bay. It seems fairly safe to say the re-spray was done relatively recently as it has very few blemishes to note. The body is also in great shape which can be a little surprising when you consider how massive the doors are. There are always a few errant door dings to account for, but nothing out of the ordinary. 18" chrome Trafficstar wheels replace the stock ones and add a bit of flair to the understated bodywork. Although, frankly the finish on them has seen better days.
Since the Soarer was designed to be a proper luxury tourer the interior came packed with all of the amenities of the time. Power seats, for instance, were a rare item to find back in '94, especially on the passenger side. Power windows, mirrors, and door locks, cruise control, were all standard and still operate as they should along with the automatic climate control. One common issue we do see with the Z30 is with the climate control screen at the top of the center console. As you can note in the photos, they have a tendency to get rather pixelated; while it has no impact on functionality it is a bit annoying. Both driver and passenger seats do have a few minor blemishes on them (which can be seen in the photos) but have been spared of any rips or tears. Due to the nature of the light gray cloth, there is some slight discoloration to the seats, however, there are no severe or notable stains to be found. While the rear seats are realistically more for storage then people, the front's are super plush making them great for long drives. One of everybody's favorite features of these interiors is the digital gauge cluster. These were well ahead of their time and unlike anything that was offered here in the US.
The main difference from the Lexus sold stateside is that potent drivetrain combination. The twin turbo 2.5L offers plenty of punch and the fact you could get a 5 speed paired up with that from the factory is pretty wild. Even in mostly stock trim, this Soarer packs plenty of punch. With only 65K verified miles the 1J fires right up with ease. Boost comes on quickly thanks to Toyota's twin-turbo design and pulls strong throughout the RPM range. With its Fujitsubo catback exhaust people will immediately be aware that this isn't your normal Toyota. Both on and off throttle sound magnificent thanks to the HKS intake which lets the turbos be known. Shifts through the robust factory R154 manual are trouble-free and the clutch shows no signs of slipping sending all that power rearward with ease. Our trained technicians have gone over the car and addressed several key maintenance concerns. The big ones being a new timing belt and water pump along with a fresh set of rubber and the typical oil change. Now that everything has been brought up to date there's nothing stopping this luxury cruiser. Combining a level of comfort, dependability, and performance rarely seen in today's vehicles makes this an ideal daily driver.
