1994 Toyota Hilux Surf SSR-X
The second-generation Hilux Surf is equal parts practical, charming, and rugged. Rigs like this 1994 are hard to find these days, and this one boasts a durable turbodiesel engine and is underpinned by a trusty 4WD system. Finished in a one-off Nightshade Black, and set off with some subtle rear privacy tint and a factory rear spoiler, the body and paint are in good shape aside from the normal dings, scuffs, and chips associated with normal use. This turn-key example is fresh off a recent service and has logged a mere 104k verified and documented miles. For those who want a timeless Toyota truck with room for five adults, featuring top-tier year-round performance, this is surely your Japanese Classic SUV!
The cabin is spacious and comes with a few electric amenities and upgrades. The MoMo wood grain steering wheel and functional Panasonic touchscreen head unit modernize the cabin's aesthetic. Above the radio sits a functional climate control system that pipes heat to the cabin and cold A/C for the summer ahead. Buyers will also be relieved to find that this SSR-X actually includes the electric sunroof upgrade, along with working power locks, mirrors, and windows which make daily use enjoyable. Even the rear window powers down which is ideal for your canine companion. The gray upholstery has a tiny wear spot on the driver seat bottom but is in otherwise above average condition. Otherwise the gray cloth lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The carpets, door cards, and headliner look decent, but we did want to note the sunroof control no longer is snug due to some damaged plastic. We also wanted to note the typical dash cracks. Still, at 25 years old it's obvious to see it's been cared for in a prior life and we think the next owner will agree.
While the surprisingly accommodating cabin is nice, real truck guys love the sturdy and simple mechanicals. This 1KZ powered Surf is fresh off an oil and filter service and starts up promptly thanks to two new 12v batteries. It idles with confidence thanks to a set of new serpentine belts and benefits from a new air filter and aluminum radiator, for proper thermal management. Torque is fed to either rear-wheels or all four depending on the outside condition and the pilot's preference. The automatic gearbox performs seamlessly, and a professionally rebuilt ECU with a lifetime warranty regulates all the electronics as it should. Acceleration is impressive for a midsize SUV and this Toyota is more efficient than its gasoline counterpart, too. For those who plan to daily drive we have replaced all the struts, front and rear, which has given the suspension a new lease on life. The brakes are confident and the power steering is light and on point. To complete the reconditioning in our shop we mounted and balanced new 31" Falkens at all four corners on the third-gen alloys. We even did the spare, too! The new rubber looks mean and will provide tens of thousands of miles of year-round grip to come.
