The only problem with Hilux Surf models is that they are nearly impossible to kill. Trucks like this 1994 are built with a beefy body on frame platform and this one is even powered by the practically bulletproof 1KZ-TE turbodiesel. Finished in a Blue/Silver two-tone (29Z,) the body is in good shape other than some normal scuffs, dings, and chips. Offered with 163K verified miles, this recently serviced and legally imported SUV is a turn-key example of one of Japan's most prolific 4x4 models.

The interior has been well looked after in Japan and has a few impressive convenience items. The cabin has remained unmodified except for the OEM head unit getting replaced by a Kenwood example. The more updated look is nice, but the aux input is especially helpful. The view of the road ahead is commanding and clear. The dash is in good shape and lacks any major cracks or discoloration which can afflict this model. The automatic climate system is easy to use and works well; it even includes a spot next to it where two cupholders pull out of the dash. A tilt-adjustable column is there for the driver to use to get comfortable and they have access to functional power windows, locks, and mirrors. Additional storage can be found up front in the form of a sizable glovebox with the factory owners' manuals are still sitting in it! The cloth seats are trimmed in a blue and charcoal cloth combo. Besides a tear in the driver's side seat bottom, they are in good nick and lack any major imperfections. The headliner is clean and the door panels have resited major wear over the years. Even the carpets still look good compared to most any vehicle of this age. The power rear glass is a cool feature literally, as it can power down and increase the cabin ventilation nicely. The rear seats fold forward if a large cargo is being transported and creates a pretty cavernous space.

The mechanicals are what enthusiasts love about these Surf models. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.0L turbo-diesel engine turns over quickly thanks to two new 12V batteries. They should last for another four years or so, and keep this thing happy to turn over during the coldest winter snaps. The massive four-banger is mated to a convenient automatic transmission. This unit is geared great for US roadways and shifts properly. Toyota chose a selective transfer case as standard equipment and the driver can select between 2WD and 4WD depending on the driving conditions. Low gearing is also available if the conditions are really treacherous. The suspension is compliant for daily use and the brakes are confident in stopping this heavy SUV. The factory alloys are all wrapped in tough, all-terrain Falken tires. They look fantastic and should provide plenty of all-season grip for years to come.
