Toyota's Hilux range has been world-renowned for being one of the most bulletproof factory chassis on and off the road. This 1994 Hilux Surf SSR-X is a prime example and based on how this one looks, it'll be tearing up back trails in no time. Coming in with only a tick under 135K verified miles paired with the best motor available, and sprinkle in a handful of rare Japan only options leaves you with arguably the best SUV on the market. Not everyone wants to deal with the added size of the 80 series or sacrifice luxury with the 70's making these a great middle ground. While notoriously capable off-road, the SSR-X model is the top of the line when it comes to the Hilux models making it ideal for on-road use as well. Let's face it, while we all love to get off the pavement from time to time, most of us are going to be spending our days cruising to work and the grocery store more than anything else which is where the SSR shines. Finished in one of the most popular colors for the Hilux Toyota's Black (204) never disappoints, and the exterior looks incredible. While the exterior is all OEM it has just the right amount of attitude with its long factory mudguards and integrated rear wing. Based on the condition of the paint and bodywork it feels safe to say it spent little, if any, time actually offroad. Aside from some light scratches in the clear and a typical door ding or two there's really not much to report. Since this one doesn't have the running boards sitting on those new Falken 31's really gives you some ground clearance if you decide to break that cycle and get it dirty.

The interior, while spartan in its design, is driver-focused and very straight forward. The factory seats are not only comfortable but also provide plenty of support to keep you firmly planted in the seats when the road disappears and things get a bit rocky. The big key to the SSR-X trim level was the factory Recaro seats which is why they have such supreme bolstering. Typically we see the driver's seat show a bit more wear from climbing in and out of the truck, but luckily this one has held up really quite well. The passenger seat does have some discoloration on the seat base along with one wear spot on the bolstering which you can see in the photos. While these do have easily accessed, and rather spacious, rear seats its appears they haven't seen much use over the years. The 50/50 split-folding rear bench makes great use of the rear cargo area nearly doubling your hauling capacity for those larger trips to Lowes. With the exception of the aftermarket radio, everything has been kept original inside, even down to the wheel which is typically the first thing to go. All of the plastics have held up remarkably well without any sort of distortion to the dash or door panels. Power options include the signature roll-down rear and side glass, power locks, and mirrors. Of course, you have a full climate control system as well for those hot days when you don't want the fresh air and would simply prefer some refreshing A/C.

Powered by the brutish 3.0L 1KZ-TE turbo diesel engine this Hilux is ready to tackle whatever you have to throw at it. Without a doubt, the 3.0L was the best motor never offered here and famous for being indestructible. The large four-cylinder fires up quickly and settles into your trademark diesel clatter. Unlike your neighbor's F350 these are rather quiet in the cabin by diesel standards. This reliable turbo diesel gets up to highway speed quickly and effortlessly, comfortably cruising at speeds. The stout automatic transmission shifts well, and the robust 4WD system functions properly. The steering is smooth and rather light considering the size of those Falken tires. There is a bit of additional road noise as a byproduct of the offroad rubber, but most anyone in the truck/suv game already knows to expect it. The stock suspension does great at sorting out all the poorly maintained roads and has no issues for when you run out of pavement. The brakes also feel strong, and the midsize SUV comes to a stop without issue. As with all of our vehicles our trained technicians have thoroughly inspected this Hilux and all maintenance is up to date. The timing belt was replaced back in Japan just 10K miles ago to go along with the new tires we put on, front right tie rod, along with a replacement brake line and oil change. These unique and rugged rigs are fully legal and ready for a new home. The indestructible nature of the driveline, coupled with classic styling and better equipment makes this Hilux Surf a real step up over the 4Runner.
