The mid-'90s were Toyota's heyday with the brand's portfolio stacked with impressive cars, trucks, and SUVs. Legitimately reliable, durable, and tough SUVs like this 1994 Hilux Surf are the vehicles that helped cement Toyotas' reputation for industry-leading design. Finished in Blue Gray Metallic (179), the body is in good shape other than some minor dings, dents, and scuffs associated with normal use. Recently serviced, with new off-road rubber all around, this rig features a stout 3.0L turbodiesel, 4x4, and a decently appointed cabin. Boasting a mere 77K verified miles, this SSR-X is a certified Japanese Classic.

The interior condition is above average for a Hilux, and surprisingly well-appointed. Trimmed with gray cloth, the color pallet complements the exterior nicely. The front buckets are supportive and adjustable, making this Hilux a great candidate for an overlanding voyage. The textured cloth is still soft to the touch and lacks any major imperfections such as rips, stains, or tears. The rear bench is in equally good shape and can flip forward to maximize rear cargo value. Additional amenities upfront include power windows, locks, and mirrors as well as dual cupholders and an adjustable steering column. Automatic climate control is standard and the A/C currently blows cold. If you prefer more natural ventilation, the OEM rain guards do a great job of keeping down the cabin noise when the windows are rolled all the way down. Just like the US 4Runner, the rear window is power-retractable in case you're carrying a few 2x4's that don't fit within the cabin's dimensional constraints. The factory head unit was upgraded to a more current Alpine unit and includes an auxiliary input for your smartphone. The speaker quality is still good and the system is more compatible with stateside radio frequencies than we typically see. The carpets are in good nick, as are the door cards and headliner. OEM plush carpet mats are included as well, and add a bit of originality.

The body on frame Hilux is a rugged brute, and this one is powered by the most desirable engine offered. The 3.0L 1KZ-TE turbodiesel is loved for its reliability and massive torque profile. It benefits from a fresh oil and filter service and turns over with a quick twist of the key. The automatic transmission is a fairly simple unit and is mated to a selective transfer case. This Surf can be driven in 2WD most of the time for the best fuel efficiency, but when extra grip is required 4WD can be engaged with the press of a button mounted on the range selector. A neat factory upgrade is the optional TEMS suspension. On the more upmarket Hilux's such as this one, the driver could control ride quality on the fly with a dash-mounted toggle switch. The system functions and the truck can handle the rigors of daily use without beating the driver up. The steering is power-assisted and light and new front brakes have been installed to help slow this lumbering giant down to manageable speeds. The aftermarket alloys are all wrapped in new oversized Falken rubber, ready to handle on or off-road use.
